TC STEERING & WEDGES

Post by Gates Family » Wed Jun 06, 2001 1:59 pm

Last night I refitted the wedges in reverse mode and test drove the TC this evening. EUREKA - it is handling superbly and I have canned any ideas I may have had about fitting a damper for the present. The steering finds its centre-line quite naturally, like water finding the plug-hole in the bath, and the touch-steering is not at all compromised when parking etc. Thanks to all who contributed to this topic - I am now done! PS - a tip. Having raised the front axle and wheels off the ground, simply remove two of the four bolts, nuts and washers from opposing corners of the bearer and axle plates. The remaining nuts you merely loosen alternatively to drop the spring, damper bearer plate etc. until a sufficient gap appears between the damper plate and axle which allows you to remove/reverse/insert the wedges. Simply slip them off and bed them down over the centering pin with a slight twist. This saves time and effort. Took me about an hour in total, though I confess to having enlisted the help of my mate Johnny Walker (well Bells, actually!). PPS - a further tip. If the remaining bolts are too short for this exercise, replace them (temporarily at least) with longer ones to facilitate getting the required gap.
