Valve seal

Post by JTPAKI@aol.com » Wed May 02, 2001 12:18 pm

T-fellows I have the engine gasket kit for my XPAG and with it are small O-ring looking seals, that one might think are valve seals. Do XPAG motors have seals other than the guide to valve clearance? If so, where do these little buggers go? If the guide is the only resistence oil, what is reasonable tolerance on valves guide. Joe Potter Eugene, Oregon USA

The "O" ring seals go directly under the split cotters, trapped in the groove on the valve stem. Their function is probably to reduce the oil running directly down the valve stem, rather than sealing of the valve guide and stem. MG quote 8mm +/-0.01 mm for valve stems and 8.06/8.08 mm for the guides. If you are fitting bronze guides you could reduce the clearance a tad but a little oil in the fuel will reduce seat erosion in the absence of TEL and hardened seat inserts. Regards Cliff
