Horns
Hi All,
Anyone know if 6 Volt Altette horns can be modified to 12 volt use? I have a
spare which I would like to use.

Ron,
It only requires tuning the horn for 12 volts with the point gap screw on
the back of the horn. As long as you don't lay on the horn incessantly, no
problem. If you want to blow the horn like a Roman taxi driver, you will
eventually fry the windings. Short bursts of under 15 seconds will not hurt
it. Caveat emptor: This is my experience, not based on any electrical
engineering!

This is a very good question.
Similar that question " Can any one drive a TC at 150 Miles/ Hour in a
sharp road curve".
The answer is " Yes " we can.
But only once. That is my thought.
So with the 6 V Horn will operate in 12 V battery. But only few times.

Why not put a large resister in line to reduce the wear on the poor horn.

Ron,
You can use the 6 V horn with 12 volts. The 6 volt version is actually
more robust than the 12 volt. You can check this yourself. Search the
internet for "6 Volt to 12 Volt conversion." You would be surprised at
all the info available. It is pretty common. A lot of American
manufacturers switch from 6 to 12 volts in the 50s and a lot of people
want to upgrade their cars to the better electrics. Generally the 6V
horn and starter are kept as they are actually more robust (heavier
gauge wiring) than the 12 volt versions and are used only for a few
seconds at a time.

hi Ron - my experience is that the horn is so darned feeble, that using a 6V
on 12V can only be a bonus...
Seriously, these Altettes sound great in the garage, whether at home or for
the MOT, but on the open road, forget it!!!
I fitted an Italian made Klaxon type (from Steve Taylor at SVC) on the O/S
of the bulkhead, which is really loud (especially in narrow streets)
On the other hand, you could always fit TWO 6V in series...

Ron,
Like Roger, as well as the standard Altette, I fitted a klaxon (similar to SVC http://www.s-v-c.co.uk/product/klaxon-horn-red/) to a small angle bracket stretched across the front dumb irons using existing holes in the chassis. The klaxon is then completely hidden underneath the front apron. It is activated by an extra push switch on the little accessories panel I fitted just below the dash.
