XPAG Cam
Jim,
I have had great success with a Crane XPAG camshaft. Much
more power and as smooth as silk. The first one has been in my
black TC for nearly a year and I have just put one in the engine of
my second TC presently being restored
I think this can be got directly from Crane in USA although I got
both of mine from Brown and Gammons in UK (Phone 44 1462
460049) under their part number AAA 3096. Price of the shaft was
was UK Pounds 134.00. It is best get their cam followers and
slightly shorter pushrod set as well as a tube of their "camlube"
grease.

Viv:
I installed the Crane cam that you speak of sixteen years ago in my own
XPAG engine. It has performed very well. Since then I have installed it in
about fifteen different T series engines. It is my best seller. I offer it
at $213.00US.

Are there any markings on the Crane cam that I could use to identify if the
one I have
is a Crane?

Re: XPAG Cam
Hi folks - at the recent T-Register Rebuild seminar here in rain-land, Gerry
Brown (no less!) gave an excellent presentation on XPAG tuning, and there
was much discussion on cams. Unfortunately, three hours could be spent
talking about them alone, never mind all the other stuff!
On his cam tech. sheet he says that the AAA3096 as supplied by B. & G.
"originates as a Crane profile", and the spec. he gives is not the same as
Skip's. In the B. & G. ads. they say "Our own improved standard camshaft"
without giving a p/n (and it is 195 inc. tax and the short pushrods to
match, so perhaps these are not the same cam anyway).
A local company which specialises in M.G.s of all sorts is interested in
bringing some genuine Crane cams across the pond for their own use, so if a
batch was ordered to get the price down, I for would would take one. watch
this space!

Re: XPAG Cam
Roger:
I am glad that you shared this info on cams. I purchased an AAA3096 Cam for
B & G in march 1988. When I received it, I noticed the similarity with the
Crane cam. The lift being .357 degrees, and the inlet and Exhaust clearance
being .018 and .020. There were no other specs listed, other than saying
that if required for accuracy, check timing and adjust by offset key to
inlet valve open at 105 degrees after TDC.
I called and talked to Jerry brown at that time, and when I mentioned that
it seemed similar to the Crane cam, he stated " Oh, you noticed that". In
the absences of other info, I assumed that they were the same. I would ask
that if you have the specs for the AAA3096 cam, could you share them, so
that one can compare them.
Thanks for all the info.
Cheers:

Re: XPAG Cam
Roger:
One last parting observence!
I eyeballed the lobes on both cams, and noticed that the "ramps" of the
Crane cam are a little fatter than the B & G cam. This could be the
difference. Possibly less overlap.

Re: XPAG Cam
Roger and all 1. Crane cams in UK You can already buy Crane cams in the UK. Moss UK offers two Crane cams [a] Crane p/n 340-0002 Crane p/n 340-0010. Crane p/n 340-0002 [mentioned by Skip Kelsey] is listed by Crane as intended as a replacement for the factory 168553 cam [=AAA3096], but requires shorter pushrods. I have fitted one in a 1300cc XPAG which I have just rebuilt to go into TC-9477, with an Eaton blower. Woody Wood's excellent XPAG book recommends the 168553 for any street XPAG, regardless of state of tune. Crane p/n 340-0010 has longer timing and more overlap. Fellow list member Steve Taylor has one of these in his black TC. Valve timing details of both of these Crane cams were posted on the list by Ray McCrary on 27 November 1999. These details used to be available on the Crane website, but were no longer available last time I looked [last year]. 2. Cam profiles Factory cam AAA3096 and factory cam 168553 were the same item. I could not make the seminar at which Gerry Brown talked, unfortunately, so do not have the timing data for the B&G cam which you mentioned Roger. However I wonder if the cam from B&G is actually the Crane 340-0002? I say this because I know that Viv bought his cam from B&G, and the data on that cam [which Viv sent me off list last year] seem to match the data for the 340-0002 except for one digit, which may be a typing error. [Viv, you had the intake timing at 0.050" tappet lift as 15/21 instead of 15/25.] Mike Card

Clive, Skip's figures are right. These are really good cams. I put
mine in together with a 4.9 cwp. The car is radically improved for
the fast country regularity runs the we like to use it for and there is
tons more torque on hills that we previously needed 3rd gear for.
