Odd Accepted wisdom, Sherrell and others, is that TC radiator slats were painted to match the interior trim. The MG TD MK II came with chrome slats. Since they were making them in the 50's, it could have been a added accessory item purchased from the dealer to dress up the car. Abingdon Spares used to sell a very nice stainless steel set of slats. They no longer have a source. Moss Motors USA sells chrome slats. They are the correct dimension material, just not bent the same as original. John Seim Irvine, CA

I need to find the proper gloss paint for my radiator slats. When TC5995 was repainted in its original clipper blue, the slats were painted the same color. I now know that they should match the inside trim - beige. I believe I can protect all surrounding parts and paint them in place. Bob Zone TC5995 Santa Fe, NM

Odd, When our cars were younger they experienced many "improvements" to suit the whim of their owners. Having the grill slats chromed was no big deal, They?were often chromed, or painted in a checkerboard pattern, or replaced with wire mesh, or... Most of these mods were made when the cars were fairly new, and there were shops specializing in "sports car accessories". The experience was like that Harley-Davidson owners enjoy today. They may be from a late TD Mk II. The TD radiator shell and slats are dimensionally the same as the TC's, so are interchangeable. The slats on the TC, standard TD, and early TD Mk II were painted, but slats for the last year or so of TD Mk II production were chrome plated. -- Chip Old Via iPhone 3.0 Mail

Hello listers! Thanks to all that replies to my question about the origin of my chrome slats. Probably they came from a late TD Mk II. My Father purchased a TD new in 1953 and it came fitted with chrome slats and it was NOT a MK2 either. So chrome slats were available on the TD's at least in 1953. I actually think chrome slats on T series cars doesn't do much for the appearance as there isn't enough contrast but this is a matter of taste. Of course a TF with colored slats sounds rather funny and I think it would look strange. We get use to seeing things a certain way. I've always painted my slats black no matter what the color the interior which looks the bees knees to me. Chip Hellie
