Years ago I repaired the spring perches on my TC rear axle. I now can't
remember if the original dimensions were maintained- there was a fair amount
of chopping and filling to do and I don't much like the looks of the job I
did. Can anyone tell me the correct vertical dimension from lower surface of
spring seat to centreline of axle, or to bottom of axle tube?

Re: TC rear axle
Hi David - its much easier to measure from the TOP surface of the axle tube
to the lower surface of the spring seat, using a 6" vernier caliper. I
looked at two and they were both 5.35" (5 + 11/32"?), axle tubes were 2.125"
(2 1/8") diam. Strengthening pieces are best welded in above the usually
distorted or cracked bolt holes to maintain correct ride height, but a
useful mod is to make up new rear spring top plates. The originals are
narrow with only half holes (i.e. semi-circular cut-outs) but wider plates
with full holes would give the axle much more support.

Re: TC rear axle
David,
I have my rear axle housing on the bench in my shop. I can get this measured
this weekend if you still need it.

TC rear axle
I just replied to John Libbert, who offered to measure his rear axle for me.
I should have replied to the group to say a couple of members have already
sent me the dimensions I need.
Thanks to all.

Years ago, I replaced all the bearings and set up the crown and pinion
meshing as per the Brown Book. This axle has not run under load since then.
Several months ago, I drained the oil, and now I find there is 8 or 9
degrees play at the pinion shaft. This seems excessive to me, and I expect
it would result in serious clunking noises, even if I remember to put oil in
before driving.
What's an acceptable amount of play at the pinion shaft? Any pointers on
what to look for when dismantling the axle, and on what's required for a
proper rebuild?

I'm replacing the pinion and differential ball bearings with tapered
roller bearings. With the brass cages eliminated, is their any good
reason not to use GL-5 oil?
Or, to put the question another way, does GL-4 oil have any
advantages in this application, other than a less agressive attack on
copper alloys?
