Problem: Abbie (TB 0304) has both water and oil temp gauges which,
from all appearances, are exactly the same instruments in all
respects. The oil temp is taken from a probe similar to the radiator
probe, but which attaches to the left side of the sump. The fitting
that holds the probe is a nut with male/male threads on both ends. I
don't know, but assume the threads are British Pipe. Their lengths
are 0.368 inches on one side of the central nut and 0.265 inches on
the other. The longer of these accepts the nut that holds the probe--
no problem. The shorter originally screwed into threads in the side
of the sump, the walls of which are aluminium and very thin. How
Abingdon expected these narrow threads in the wall to last more than
one sump removal remains a mystery. In any case, it takes only one
or two sump removals to destroy the threads. Mine are now shot.
Seeking an alternative, I ordered Moss Chassis Part No. 361-060 (Item
42 in the Moss drawing), the adapter that accepts the water temp
probe. But now another problem arises: The long thread on the
adapter accepts the probe nut fine, but the short male side is too
short to go through the sump wall, accept washers on both sides of
the wall and a nut on the inside. That 0.265 inch length just
doesn't hack it. Does anyone know where one can obtain an adapter
with the same threads, but one having a through-the-wall thread
length of not less than 1/2 or 3/4 inch? Until I can fix this, Abbie
is down and out. Cheers, Skip

The best way to install the probe fitting is to drill a hole in the oil
drain plug, then silver solder or braze the adaptor in. The probe can then
be inserted and screwed down. My car has been fitted this way for many
years. Be very careful that you dont kink or break the capillary line though.
