California trip
My wife Carolyn and I are planning a road trip from Toronto Ontario to LA California in early March. Any suggestions on good routes at this time of year and things to see on the way down and back appreciated. And yes, it s an MG related parts trip. Thanks, Bob Grunau

Re: California trip
Bob,
Interstate 70 from Denver to Utah is georgeous although there is 120
miles of no services on one part. Being an interstate it is kept
clear. May be out of your way but Highway 101 in Washington and
Oregon and then Highway 1 through California is a great and beautiful
mostly 2 lane MG route but slow.
If you get down to the San Diego area and need assistance don't
hesitate to call. 619 462-7677.

Think about following the Ohio River to the Mississippi. Then head south along the Mississippi along the old Natchez Trail. Lots of nice old plantation B&Bs. And I remember fondly Hwy 160, along the southern border of Missouri to Branson. This is a fabulous MG road which skirts the Ozark Mts - beautiful country there and a little south into Arkansas. Locals said 160 is so "twisty" that if you go a little too fast you'll see your tail lights. Branson is full of Country and Western "theaters", a great stop for entertainment. An hour or so south is Eureka Springs, site of a GOF Central a few years ago. Its a wonderfully preserved old Spa Town. Also, you should catch parts of Old Route 66 - the old Chicago to LA road. There are books published on it. Cheers, Peter

Re: California trip
Bob and Carolyn: As David Edgar just wrote, it is probably out of the way but, should you choose to travel through California on Hwy. 101, Cathy and I would welcome the opportunity to meet you. We live 2 blocks west of Hwy 101 in the coastal redwoods just 15 miles south of the Oregon border where Hwy 199 coming from Grants Pass, Oregon meets Hwy 101 in California. This is 5 miles north of Crescent City, California. Driving time from here to the SF Bay Area on Hwy 101 through the "Avenue of the Giants" redwood forests (which are between Crescent City and Garberville) is a comfortable 8 hours. Add 2 hours if you branched off Hwy 101 south of Garberville at the Leggett junction over to the coast on Hwy 1. Our phone is 707-465-6254. Car folks are always welcome. Best. As others have said... it would be a shame to come to California and not
drive north. Make Peter Welch in BC your northern goal and take some time
here in the SF bay area and the wine country along the way, then on up
through the redwoods that are home to Bob Johnson. We can find some tyres for
you to kick and some swell shopping for Carolyn!!
