I recently purchased a 2003 KLR 650 and am planning an extensive trip to Mexico/Baja. I am concerned about oil changes on the road and would like to know if its alright to use synthetic oil--and if so,what brand, weight etc. As you can tell,I am the worlds worst mechanic. Would appreciate any and all comments and help. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

I wouldn't use an oil that I could get on the road which eliminates most motorcycle specific oils. Many use Mobil 1 15w50 (me included) with good results. I change my oil and filter every 3,000 miles but on the road you can strech this out to the factory recommended interval of 6,000 miles. You ought to be able to do most trips without an oil change by changing before you leave and when you get back. An oil change on the road is not a big deal as it only takes a couple of tools. You will need to take your own filter as the chance of finding one is remote. Stan jwebb1208@... wrote: I recently purchased a 2003 KLR 650 and am planning an extensive trip to Mexico/Baja. I see that others are on point based on message titles ( I just got back home ).... Many diesel oils look to be best: $$/benefit assessment - check the composition formulas. This post of mine is late, but it is also (expected) to be redundant. :-) ( BIG LAUGH____ ) Mike Torst A16 aka lasvegasrider

Here in the US I'm a Mobil 1 type of guy. I don't know if it's sold in Mexico; I do know I've never seen it there. What I see most of down there is Quaker State. You get it in auto parts stores not gas stations. My bike ran just fine when I changed to Quaker State in Veracruz state and predictably burned less oil than with the Mobil synthetic. I think it was 10-40 but maybe it was 20-50; I forget. Anyway use one of those and you'll be able to top off anywhere. I'd also install a reusable oil filter. Fred can sell you one; that's where I got mine. Make sure to have him include a few extra sets of grommets with the order. You should change them out when you remove the filter. Also, Skip Mascura of Pancho Villa tours gave me good advice before my first trip to Mexico over a decade ago. Now I'll give it to you: Get a reflective vest. Bogdan

Everyone over the age of 19 is OLD! snip... I prefer to look at things this way: God does not deduct the hours you spend on a motorcycle from your allotted time on earth. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
