Fellow KLR'ites,
My apologies for the long post.....
Once again I seek the wisdom of the Collective!
Now that "The Prodigal Son" has returned from it's 4 year journey into
the desert I'd like to finish the project I started so long ago.
I'm planning to kit the bike out for an extended trip which may or may
not happen next year.
Currently I ride about 80% highway and city with the remainder being
dirt/gravel but nothing too technical ...yet. I'm 205 lbs and 6' 2"
tall. 45 years old and blue eyes..... WHOOPS !! Wrong group... Sorry!!
Many of you have been on these bikes much longer than I have and many
have already done all the research for me. To those who respond, I will
compile the results and send them to all of you individually. I can also
post those results to the list if that's OK. I'm not looking to upset
the apple cart or ruffle the feathers of anyone but I'd like to get your
informed opinions.
So here goes with the questions......
1. What are your opinions and experiences with Pelican cases?
2. Who, in your opinion makes the best racks for the Pelican 1550's.
3. What are your opinions on the "KLR PD Nerf" from Happy Trails. Have
any of you used this guard with front panniers?
4. What racks/bags/panniers are you all using and what are the positives
& negatives of them? I've used front panniers before. Helped keep some
weight on the front wheel.
5. Brake light modulator - Has anyone built one of these? Ideally the
brake light will pulse when applied and then remain on till released.
They are available on the web but I'd like to build one if possible.
6. Accessories - I need to run a GPS, Dual Band Ham Radio, Grip
warmers, and electric vest. I can toggle between the vest and grips if
necessary. Will the stock charging system cope with this?
7. Center Stand - What's best?
8. There are at least two individuals on this list that have stainless
steel upgrade kits..... One was on eBay but I did not get the address. I
know Jake offers a fastener kit. Who else?
9. Has anyone ever added a grease fitting to the control arm? Pro's &
cons please?
10. Fork brace - Many out there.... One that works and isn't gold
plated.
11. Exhaust - Currently have an old Supertrapp but the crooks took the
disks, bolts and end cap. Currently running with no cap or disks. Will
this cause problems.
12. Tires - Have Avon Gripsters on now.... I understand that these have
gone the way of the DoDo. So what's the best for an 80/20 guy like me?
13. Lighting - Suggestions to better the existing system? Anyone mounted
additional lights below the cowl?
14. Sprockets - Given the 80/20 I spoke of (prefer to cruise!!!) what do
you recommend?
So, there you have it......
Thanks in advance for all the info.

Dave Watkins

Hello all,
Any suggestion as to where to find a used 400cc+ KLR or other dual sport.
I'm looking in the $2500 price range and within a 200 mile radius of New
York City.
Thanks,
Justin

Hello,
Opps I forgot to put my location in. I'm in Omaha Nebraska, 500 miles
from almost everywhere. I'm having surgery next week so can't deliver.
Accesories all sold, except for set of 5 new spare spokes and
nipples, for KLR $20.00 +shipping.(cost $40.00.
One more time, this is your last chance! Buy this bike now!
Just kidding, but it's a good buy.
1993 KLR 650, 17,600 miles
Always garaged, good condition, most decals off. Moose skid plate
Happy Trails original guards. SS front brake line. Avon gripsters,
new front.
$1500 USD. Going in local paper this weekend.
John Houchins,
KLR's name is "Vagabunda", but you can call her what you want if you
buy her.

Good thread- the degradation of society in all of its
aspects. Let me use combination of analogies to
illustrate my take on this: "too many cars; not enough
road," expanded to "too many people, not enough
earth."
In my opinion, the vast majority of our societal and
other problems stem from overpopulation. Think about
it. There are now so many of us that nearly everything
we do is overcrowded. To the guy in the car, the
person on the bike is just another pain in the a** and
expendable. There are so may of us that we are no
longer dependent on a particular individual. Instead
of working together, the other guy is more often in
the way.
If those with particular agendas, such as global
warming or preservation of wilderness, or concern
about depletion of fossil fuel or HIV or school
overcrowding, or too many cars on the road, or feeding
the world's population of the proliferation of a poor,
uneducated, violent underclass---all of these and more
would solve themselves- no, disappear- if our
population were lessened by probably 75%.
Think about the USA with, say 30 million souls
rathe r than 300 million. Would there be resources to
go around? global warming would be gone...etc etc.
Humanity has gotten too good at stopping the
plagues and pestilences, that in the past, kept
population under control- we are simply overrunning
our planet. Consider the starving millions in Africa.
And it is those who are least able to tend for their
offspring, both here and there, that keep popping out
more children. The the remaining scintilla of good
left in us causes us to attempt to care for those
unfortunate millions who cannot care for themselves.
Those folks in all the special interest groups
ought to focus on population control and even
reduction; and if effective, the result would be, most
likely, that their particular issue would disappear of
its own accord.
As they say, my 2cts worth..and putting on flame
suit
