What's the collective opinion on these two models? I am going with one of them for a trip later next month, but can't tell which will work better with my 2002 KLR650. Got my used stock a13 last week. 11k. Bone stock. First real bike but for 4 weeks last year on a yamaha street bike before it pooped out. Need the bike for a year long stint in mexico. As a fairly new listmember, I promise to not relate everything that happens in the course of my new relationship with this machine, but the motorcycle community has recently blown my mind. Like last weekend. This list, of course, is a sweet example of this community, but I took the bike out on a curvy dusty lonely southern sierra highway, going camping by self on friday night at a campground in Sequoiah nat'l park. I wreck it: saw the cliff, couldn't make the turn and used front brake on the dust road... ouch. Now I know better. Radiator fan is buzzing, radiator bent up, left body panel broken.. So I bed donw for the night and eat some of my food and in the middle of the night, this really drunk hick pulls up in his 4x4, shouting at me and I tell him what happened. He pulls in and the stench of cheap beer hits before he sets down a foot. But can I tell you that he not only knew what kind of bike I had, but that he was looking for one himeself? You should ahve heard/seen/smell this guy. And dont get me wrong- super cool. He not only offers me some beer, but fixes my bike, bending my radiator back from the fan. Another perfect stranger comes blazing by in a car, and my new drund friend JIm says "where's the party?" The new guy jumps out, and sez, "hey, a klx650!" He knows this bike too (I forgave him the kl "x" part..) and he realigns my front wheel (banging it against Jim's truck) and goes on to tellme he raced for yamaha mx six years, why boots and armor are important, and gives me a full diagnosis of my once wrecked-now fixed bike. Crap, its 8pm and its poker night.. but the moral of the story is that motorcross guy showed me all kinds of crap, rode my bike the rest of the way to the campground for me ( I took his car), gave some gloves, crazy drunk Jim got arrested by the park rangers, and a whole lot of crazy stuff that just didn't ever really happen in the ol' preKLR650 days. Is this kind of brotherhood common? What the hell was that? I thought my bike was done for (like a newby I guess) and rode another 200+ miles that weekend, learned how to jump, how to turn, and a lot of other stuff. Well, here's to humanity and the brotherhood among motorcyclists, even if the bond between us is just a product, a peculiar combination plastic and metal. If there are any riders near kings or sequoiah nat'l park... lets go riding sometime this month! Mexico is calling me in late june... sam stovall visalia, CA a13

hello there, i've just bought a well used 1990 tengai 650. does anybody have any ideas about this problem? from idle up to opening the throttle to 4000 rpm it surges constantly. it rises about a thousand rpm and then drops back. it will eventually cut out at idle. i've cleaned the carb; it looked ok. vacum tubes seem ok. its a real pain to ride at low revs. any ideas? thanks, keith --------------------------------- Do You Yahoo!? Hmm, like maybe an air leak? Worth checking for.

Maybe a small hole in the diaphram (sp?) in the carb? Ron

I'm going to say probably not the carb diaphragm. The typical symptom of a bad diaphragm is ok running on the pilot circuit, but refuses to rev (since the slide wont lift). I would suspect a blocked pilot jet or fuel delivery problem. Will the bike idle on the "choke"? if so, the pilot jet is suspect. How about the vacuum line to the petcock, or a faulty diaphragm there (does the vacuum-operated petcock employ a diaphragm?) (I wasn't going to post, but I wanted to see if I could spell "diaphragm" twice in a row).

I had this problem. It was caused by dirt in my gas tank. I dumped all the gas out of my bike and took a good look at it and there were 5 or 6 little grains of sand in there. So what was happening is that at high rpm's and gas pull, it was pulling these little devils into my carb and blocking the jets. Michael A11

My 1993 & 1999 Klr650 were both bone stock. Factory exhaust stock carb. The only modif. modfication was street tires .Oil & filter changed every 2000 miles. My 99 had 7 oil changes and was serviced by dealer the month befor the balancer chain let go due to broken spring a second time.Buy the way my dealer in Ocala Fl gets $60.00 per hr If you missed my first message the 93 locked up at 36000 miles & the 99 only lasted for 7450 miles. MY DEALER LOCATED A USED MOTOR WITH INSTULATION 2140.So as soon as it's fixed I probely sell it.Dome once shame on you do me twice shame on me how could I jusify a third time . Dan Moscicki p.s.
