valve adjustment
Hi all I set checked the valves on my 89 klr 650 ,the intake were
just a little tite went the next size smaller, ex. is in the middle
left them alone but now the engine is not running good .had the cams
off so i had to reset the chain had the TDS or T up and set the
arrows on the cam gears to the front but they were not perfectly
straight with each other but not a hole tooth worth . Pulled the
chain tensioner and reset it . no change the engine ran great befor
so i am stumped , any help ? Kevin b

valve adjustment
Mine is also an 89, and when i did my valves i got the same results(besides
my previous carb problems...) the arrows woud not line up exactly paralel
with the head, It was for sure at T. and also the arrows were at slightly
diffrent angles from each other, just like you said. so I set everything as
close as i could get, reset the tentioner about 5 times, re mounted the cams
2 times, no change. I wonder if my chain is stretched or something. I do not
know about a running difference because something is still wrong in my carb,
at 1/4 throttle it has a big dead spot i have to jump over to keep it
running...

valve adjustment
I can't help with your current problem but I can help you avoid future
problems. There is no need to remove the cams when adjusting the
valves. Instead remove the cam caps, gently lift the cam, and swap
the shims. It might be a good idea to buy Phantom Jay's Valve
Adjustment video. I think it's $25 well spent dollars.

valve adjustment
My apologies Mark. For the record I do use your procedures. They're
at my side when I actually do the work. They are excellent and very
much appreciated. Being able to work on my own machine adds
significantly to the overall enjoyment and saftey of the motorcyling
experience. A big part of my decision to go with the KLR was based on
the availability of information provided by you, Devon, Jay, and other
members of this list. Thank You (everyone) Very Much!

valve adjustment
I just finished checking my valve clearaces thanks to Mark's
excellent procedures. My intake clearances were .102mm (.004)
and .152mm (.006) and the exhaust were .152mm (.006) and .178mm
(.007). So a couple of them are right at the minimum clearance. My
bike only has 600 miles on it. Should I go ahead and adjust them now
or wait until they get out of specs. Should I take it to the dealer
and have them do it since it is under warranty or do it myself. No
sure if it would void the warranty. Didn't seem like it would be too
difficult using Marks' procedures. Any advice is greatly apprecited.

valve adjustment
Mine is half stripped in the garage right now, waiting for the shims
from Fred to arrive. ( Just order them from him, you will not beat his
prices, hell I aint figured out how he can sell them for $3.99 )
I ordered the 3 I needed ( get to reuse one ) to set them to max spec,
and will check them again in a couple years.
If you can go without the bike (assuming its apart now) for a few
days, might as well just wait, since its a PITA to put all the junk
back on it and then have to remove it again just to drop the shims in.
