valve adjustment

Whats the time frame.I have lost or missed placed my manu.I have about 1600 miles on my KLR now is it to early to ajust the valves?

Bob, In the files section, someone put the maintainence schedule(?) in a graphics format. I put the A15 schedule in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format for my own purposes (and bored one day). It's a good baseline (from reading the list, many have increased the frequency of some checks). If you would like the file, please let me know which version of Excel you have (a must), and I can e-mail it to you. I printed it out and tacked it to the garage wall. Mike Yuhas San Marcos, CA A15

Hello, I am in the midst of doing a 3K valve check using Eldon Carl's excellent posting, but have run into a problem. I have rotated the engine a few times, looking at the timing marks. It rotated smoothly, with the exhaust and intake valves being pushed in and out. While rotating the engine suddenly locked. It sits with the exhaust valves up and the inntake valves just starting their downward movement. I do not want to put too much pressure on the rachet, for fear of breaking something. Any ideas as to why it has "locked up". Is this just compression lock? Can I undo the sparkplug to release pressure. Any and all ideas are appreciated. thanks, Kevin Green

Uh-oh. Here we go again. I think your cam chain jumped a few teeth because your tensioner had already been removed when you rotated the engine (just a guess). If this were me, I'd remove the camshafts, rotate the engine to TDC, install the cams back to their normal TDC position (using the arrows on the sprockets), re-install the tensioner, and send an e-mail to the webmaster of the dualsport.org site begging him to update the Eldon Carl Valve Adjust Page to make it a bit less confusing. Being the procrastinator I am... I let valve adjustment time sneak up on me without ordering a service manual. The manual is due in 1.5 weeks. If anyone out there has that section of the manual on a computer I'd sure appreciate a copy. I'd sure hate to have to park the KLR 650 for that long. Thanks in advance...

Let's not get into the manual thing again, please. (Unless you already know this, be prepared for a manual for 1984 600, and a supplement.) I would not park the bike just be cause the odometer is 6,001 miles past the last check. Hell, I'd fell comfortable running it several thousand more miles if I had to, assuming you have been staying on top of it up to now. The valves should be inspected every 6K, but unless you thrash the dog feces out of it, you shouldn't have to adjust them but every, oh, say 15-18,000 miles or so. I mean, I'm all for proper maintenance and all that, but we can vary from the book a *little* bit. :-) -Tom '96 KLR 650 Just turned 49,000 miles last night! Woo...
