The closest bike I've seen to the KLR price wise with a modern engine and price wise was the Husky Terra. It listed at 7K  but by the time they added shipping and assembly and taxes it was closer to 7600 bucks.  And, a near 350  miles to the closest dealer. But, now that is no more.
Kawasaki is still selling the KLR's pretty good down here in Louisiana but, let's face it. Cruisers are the ride of choice at present with sport bikes next.  Also, Suzuki's DR650 and Honda's XR650 are still just as old school as the KLR.
Another thought comes to mind when I was at a dealership and saw the first KLX650 which was selling at near 1000 dollars over the KLR. It had a lot of points better than the KLR , but, not a 1000 bucks worth. I really think that if KHI would of put FI on the KLX and the 6.1 gallon tank, The near 1000 bucks increase would of been accepted more.
So far, I'm staying with my 16 yrs old KLR and 8 yr old Suzuki Bandit 1250S.

Amazing what people can think of and then actually pull off.  Looks like he did 3X's over to boot.  What really bugs me are the small project I have in works which are sitting / pending and not getting done.  By comparison  make me feel like a shlub for procrastinating so bad.
