Thanks for sharing Norm! What year is your KLR and what lights are you mounting? I've got my lights mounted on the fairing which presents a very visible light pattern to oncoming traffic, but I've always wondered about moving them closer to the road for more light.

He said that they need shorter screws but will allow one to use red LED or bulbs in the rear as combination tail and signal lights. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2-Pair-4-Clear-1986-2003-Boulevard-Savage-Intruder-Marauder-Lens-MT274-007-CL-/131536421542?hash=item1ea02e82a6:g:pt8AAOSw~OdVfnHS&vxp=mtr I'm looking for red LED panels to match the clear ones I've been using in the front so will report on those. Red bayonet bulbs are common if one prefers. These fit into the signal lights on Gen1 and produce a brighter running/signal light. Also super for vehicle dome lights, RV interior, and other uses. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x-12V-Car-48-SMD-White-LED-Light-Panel-T10-Festoon-Ba9s-Dome-Map-Interior-Bulbs/381018031525?_trksid=p2059210.c100148.m2813&_trkparms=aid%3D333008%26algo%3DRIC.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20140127102845%26meid%3D7baf59e62c5740229a3b39038863577f%26pid%3D100148%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D4%26mehot%3Dpp%26sd%3D221964775005 I will look for red versions.

My experience with driving lights is that they are most effective when they are closer to the line of vision of the rider. The greater the angle of difference, the greater the shadow effect, etc.

Are people mostly mounting LED lights. I need to add lights to my '01 KLR so on those infrequent occasions I'm riding home from work in the dark I can see the deer before I hit them. Would tungsten lights draw too much power?

Not sure about most but LED lights drawless power so good on ur battery.I mounted one on each side of headlight...brackets attached to modified fairing onmy KLR.  Got them at superbrightleds dot com...love them. Be sure to get diffused units, not spot lights or you will blind folks. Peace. Sent from my Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone-------- Original message --------From: "John Theilgard jthouses@... Have to disagree on not getting the spots. Running the 12w Cree lights (16w on the other bike) fixed mounted to the fairing bracket. Wired them to switched relays so always on. Aimed them for low beam distribution. Spots gave light out to low beam range, after which it begins to dissipate pretty quickly. Rare to get flashed and much better at being seen day or night. Cheap insurance in my opinion. Todd On 3/28/2016 9:56 AM, Larry larrysumner@... [DSN_KLR650] wrote:

The KLR is short of electrical power so every bit helps, especially if using accessories in stop and go traffic. People seem not to understand that the alternator's rated capacity is only achieved at very high RPM and so one almost never encounters conditions when the system is at full output. I always recommend beginning lighting upgrades by looking for ways to conserve power while at least maintaining brightness. Replacing the instrument lights, tail light and license light with LED can provide much of the power needed for an additional driving light, for example. I recommend changing up the head light before adding driving lights, for the same reason. HID or LED headlights will usually free up enough power for modest LED driving lights. If one must retain the stock QI headlight, headlight relays with a decent sized wiring helps a lot in output.   ------ Original Message ------ From: "Larry" To: "John Theilgard jthouses@...
