klr 650 tire recommendation

Post by SniperOne308 » Sat Dec 05, 2015 8:08 pm

I have been running the TKC 80 on my 1200 GSA with the same very good results on/off road in everything but the mud.  The problem is life on that great rear tire runs about 3500 miles for me (5500 on the front).  I've been through 3 full sets plus a couple of rear tires in 2 years.  This time I went to Shinko 804/805 and after about 1k miles I find the rear handles as good as the TKC and front a little better than the TKC both on and off road.  Why am I trying the Shinko?  They are almost half the cost of the TKC. As for the TKC 80s I ran on the KLR, great for mixed on/off road use. They were better on pavement than the D606 and of course the D606 was better in the loose stuff off road.   Things about the TKC 80 I didn't care for on the KLR:  the paired knobs down the center of the front tires wore abnormally quick compared to the rest of the tread.  That made them really noisy for about the last 1k of pavement miles before replacing them.  (The same can be said of this tire on my GSA) What I would like to see Continental do is make the 21" tire with the same big block pattern as their 19" tires.  But in fairness it seems most of the manufacturers go to small block patterns on a 21" tire. I like them on road and off. Good in mud too, for me. Good in snow! Ha! Wear is not a concern. The front tire gets radically scalloped (supposedly due to front braking, which I do routinely) but continues to work just fine. I realize they are not cheap, but I don't mind paying for performance. Mitas E07 or E10.  Stiff side walls, but great manners on the road (even wet) and great off road.  :) On Sunday, December 6, 2015 11:08 AM, "RobertWichert robert@... the ideal wiring harness

Post by landsail » Mon Dec 07, 2015 9:19 am

Norm, that is a great idea regarding improving and simplifying a KLR wiring harness. I have had issues with the 4 connector assembly located below the headlight. My tachometer still suffers from a poor connection and when I upgraded to a Cyclops LED bulb, I added a headlight relay kit that has worked well on my other bikes (FZ1). I think a future improved wiring harness kit with good instructions would be popular item to offer to KLR riders and hopefully reward your efforts. Thanks for taking this on if there is enough interest. Wish I lived closer to you to help( You Tube installation video?). Mark H, a Nevada landsailor and 2007 KLR!

klr 650 tire recommendation

Post by Rodney Enriquez » Mon Dec 07, 2015 10:01 am

Look into Shinko 700s I run them and like them very much. They are very reasonably priced and work great both on and off road. On Monday, December 7, 2015 6:01 AM, "E Hines ridingmyklr@... Wear is not a concern.  The front tire gets radically scalloped (supposedly due to front braking, which I do routinely) but continues to work just fine.  I realize they are not cheap, but I don't mind paying for performance. That made them really noisy for about th e last 1k of pavement miles before replacing them.  (The same can be said of this tire on my GSA) What I would like to see Continental do is make the 21" tire with the same big block pattern as their 19" tires.  But in fairness it seems most of the manufacturers go to small block patterns on a 21" tire. klr 650 tire recommendation

Post by secarver7 » Mon Dec 07, 2015 6:43 pm

I've tried many tire combos. Now IRC Vulcanduros with ultra HD tubes and 4 oz of green slime are the tire of choice on dual sport bikes. Large aggressive knobs won't chunk & wear better than some street tires. 24 psi street 12- 8 psi trail. Use a compact bicycle pump with a built in pressure gage to air up. Read tire reviews on rocky mtn Atv mc. Have never been questioned about non dots in 37 states. Can run 90- 100 mph in heat with no issues.

also tote a compact bicycle pump called a Mountain Morph.  It's kind of old school but they're small and work pretty well.  Have CO2 as back-up in the kit to fully air a flat etc.  Fits in the tank bag nicely.
Lots of folks have started using Shinko's, so if something weren't OK we'd probably hear about it by now?  Has anyone seen prices come down with lower cost of oil?  What's worrisome to some extent are all the companies who've moved manufacturing to China, India and the like to reduce cost.  Doesn't always mean the product will suffer but have seen plenty of cases where QC becomes an issue.  Controlling vendor supply chain can be a big problem.
