NO, his service video was basically to service the forks by replacing the
seals, bushings, and fork boots. You will need to completely disassemble
the forks for that. To just change oil, the only thing that needs to be
removed is the oil drain screw. I'd bleed off the air pressure first so you
don't make a big mess. Then loosen the upper pinch bolts on the triple
clamp and remove the top cap. You will want to pump the forks up and down
to remove the last of the fork oil. Replace the drain screw, the correct
amount and type of fork oil, springs/spacers (if removed) and then tighten
the fork cap. That's is it, pretty simple.
This was a well edited video but we all have different ways of doing the
same thing. So I won't go into what I do differently but my biggest
complaint with this video is that he calls the Damper Rod a Dampener Rod.
Big difference. To Damp something is much different than to Dampen
something. If you don t know the difference, look it up. It's called a
DAMPER ROD. May seem like a little issue to most but being a mechanic makes
me cringe when something is called by a wrong name.

I forgot to mention to retighten the upper pinch bolts. (obvious) The reason you have to loosen just the upper pinch bolt is because they will pinch down on the tube and cause the end cap to be tight in the threads. Loosening the pinch bolts will allow the end cap to be more easily removed. Just be sure to tighten everything up before test riding.

Interesting, Paul. The ATF that Andy and Jeff recommend is probably 7 weight. Am I right about that ? Also a lighter weight might work for me because I'm around 150 lb.. Then again I often travel with my bike loaded.

Just wanted to re-emphasize and make clear. When I ride the motorcycle is loaded; I'm never loaded .at least when riding.

Interesting, Paul. The ATF that Andy and Jeff recommend is probably 7 weight. Am I right about that ? Also a lighter weight might work for me because I'm around 150 lb.. Then again I often travel with my bike loaded.

The "W" grading of any oil is only an approximation of it's viscosity. To determine the actual, real viscosity you should look up it's Kinematic Viscosity (typically measured at 40 and 100 degrees C), measured in centistokes/mm^2/s. (Google is your friend)
For instance, MotoELF fork oil is thus at 40C
10W: 47cS
15W: 72.6cS
20W: 99cS
Compare that to the Royal Purple ATF I used, which is 32.5cS at 40C.
So, the ATF that -I- used is probably around 8-9W if it were graded on that scale. Other manufacturers 10W will have a different actual viscosity at 40C, so the "W" number is largely vague. Different ATFs also have different viscosities in cS, so I recommend you look them up for yourself.

265 in my birthday suit, so over 100 pounds more than you. I also travel

Why....
Viscosity breakdown...is not a myth... The breakdown is driven by the shearing action through the oil film shearing in the fork slide bushings, and the damping valves. The amount of energy disspipated is significant. Try this is yo do not believe the energy absorption in shear....sit on the bike lock the front brake and pump the front suspension through the handlebars.....tonite that when you release the pressure on a new bike the front extend and stops with no bounce. This is due to the energy absorption some of it from the fork seal but not a lot.
Thee ergo can be calculated ....but it matters little. ..to illustrate by example. Note that rear shocks of mx bikes tend to have remote finned rest ours to keep the fluid cool.... That heat generation take place is a very smal section of the shock...the space between the valve port and the valve itself and in the bushing clearances....that heat is completely developed by shearing the oil.
The effect of the local heat is to break some of the longer chain molecules and render them less viscos and more reactive as you develop open radicals to reform with other molecules or close on themselves making some short chained junk...or react with another long chain materials in an uncontrolled reaction making " sludge".
The fork seals don't. The fact you fork has a thing film of ol means de fato..that dirt is getting into the fork. It is a tow way street. So crap is mixing with the sheared oil making a non lubricity e goop with decent abrasive qualities accelerating the problem. And there is a bit of a diabetic pumping wich bring moisture into the fork which over time also helps make sludge.
Used to ride mx...fork rebuilding was and is normal maintenance. Th cz had gas assisted forks and is till got phlegm in the things. Off season work consisted of dumping the air draining the forks. Pull the legs clean everything replace the valve springs And flushing a few times. Rebuild the thing with three new fork seals on each leg and re pressurize ..I liked to dry the air by pulling the intake air through desiccant..but that cost money so I used an old min radiator 5 bucks sitting in a bath of alcohol and dry ice. That was so cold the rh was well under 1 %. This reduced the sludgy stuff by a lot.
If you do a goody amount of dirt riding you should rebuild every 12 k. If a lot of dirt riding ..say 80 %and you live like in west baskerfeild...change fork ol every 6 k.
I have 5 k ne min mostly city. But when I do the 6 k service I will change the oil.
