valve shims

The shims are labeled in milimeters 260 = 2.60 mm. Keep your clearance measurments in mm and it will make things much easier. --Jim A-15

Anyone know if valve shims from KZ-Z1-Z1R will fit KLR 650? They are 29mm, but am not sure they will work. Thanks James in Arkansas

They ought to -- isn't this covered in the FAQ? I've used 29mm BMW shims with no problem -- this is the shim used on early F650 motors and in some years of the K75 -- BMW dealers almost always have all the sizes in stock and my local BMW dealer is $2 cheaper than my local Kawasaki dealer anyway. Another shim that _used to_ be commonly available that should fit is the shim from the Yamaha engine used in the Ford Taurus SHO. Few Ford dealers will have these in stock any more, but for the really fussy, they come in increments that are 1/2 those of the KLR shims. I have read that it matters _which_ shims of a given size you use because they're supposed to be hardened just slightly less than your vehicle's camshaft so they wear instead of it wearing. But I've also heard that basically all shims and camshafts are hardened to the same specification. Beats me. I haven't seen any evidence of wear on the cams in my KLR since I started using the BMW shims. Some bikes use 29.5mm shims. Those won't fit -- don't get them by accident and try to force them, someone on the list did that once and was Sad. Thor

valve shims

OK, here's the deal, I needed to adjust my valves five months ago so I bought the shim kit from Arrow. I did the valve job and it was fine, until now! I needed to do it again, but I found that the shim kit that I bought had shims from 230-270 and this adjustment needs to go lower, so the moment you all have been waiting for... Does anyone need some larger(thicker) shims they would be willing to trade for some smaller(thinner) shims? I need to see how many of each I have, but I would be looking for 215-225. Please let me know, thanks KLR group! GM

Wow, how many miles do you have on your bike? I'm using 245 shims for a couple of valves at 16K miles, but they haven't measurably moved in around 8K miles. I hope there isn't something else going on with your valves... -- Blake Sobiloff http://sobiloff.typepad.com/> San Jose, CA (USA)

I didn't want to say, but I think the old girl might me getting tired. Although, the nearest I can tell(from the factory shims)is that the valves had never been adjusted in it's life time. It's a 87' w/28500miles under her belt. I was hoping that it was just because of the hard time I had with the first adjustment, is why I'm having problems so fast. The starboard IN was so tight on the first try, that I could not get a laser beam under it, or oil I bet. It took three tries to get them close. Now, it's the IN that are tight again, so I was hopeing that this try would tell me if the valve is checking out or not, but my shims don't go low enough. I have a 235 and 240 in the EX and that never changed from the first go around, so there holding. I hope this clears it up better. GM

<><><><><><><> <><><><><><><> gjbellinger, Fred here, owner of the list and Arrowhead Motorsports is a good source. Your local dealer should also have them available. A BMW dealer should have them for less than a Kawasaki dealer. Ask for shims for a K75, around late 90s.
