Okay, I've got to ask. I'm as anal retentive as the next guy (I'm not proud of it) but really, what are we talking in +/- tolerences for the shims. Are they really that far out? I mean, does it matter? I have not yet done a shim and bucket valve adjustment job but have done the set screw type and know that you are only going to get soooo precise with that type of arrangement. Basically what I am saying is it worth worrying if the shims are .001 off? Hell, even my feeler guages jump up in sizes greater than that. I too want to be perfect but then I always have to remeber that in real life there is only so much precision I am going to achieve in my home garage. I always like to think that I'm taking that extra step that the dealership technician is likely to ignore.

I found a shim that was the next size down from what was marked. .001" doesn't sound like much, but it's 50% of the difference in size between shims, so I'd say it's way too much. And, the first time you're adjusting valves and nothing measures out to what you'd expect when you put it back together, it's nice to know why. Shim'n'bucket is simply a far more precise way to adjust valves, I have two bikes with screw'n'locknut and honestly considering the amount of times that the valves have to be adjusted over the ife of a bike, I'll take the shims. No, I didn't measure them. I figured that what was written on them was correct. But from what I hear, they can be a size off of what is written. I checked the clearances about 5 times after I put it back together, so I'm not too worried. Ryan

Fundamentally this bothers me as I suspect that the same dealers with no shims in stock would gladly charge you for a 'valve adjustment' and have the bike to you the next day. How could a shop not stock valve shims?

I went to Cycle Sports, my local Honda/Kawasaki dealer. Asked the parts counter for valve shims, they didn't understand what I was asking for. "You know little shims used for a valve adjustment"?... blank stare. He fires up the micro fiche and I show him. "I'll have to order those" he sprightly retorts. "I'll go ask the service dept if they will sell me some" I offer. "Can I purchase a few valve shims from you guys?" I ask of the service manager. "We don't carry any of those in stock" he replies. "You don't carry them, or you just don't want to raid your stash?" I ask. "We don't carry them" he replies cheerfully. "How do you do the valve's without them?" I query. .... blank stare. "Goodbye" West Eugene, OR.

My local dealer never really said if he had them, but told me that his retail was I think $12.99 each.. I pretty much quit listening at that point. And his chuckle on the phone when I asked if he would exchange sizes pretty much told me his next reply when I even said exchange plus pay a couple bucks. Then came Fred donning his Super Hero Red tights and Black Cape and shipped me out the 3 sizes I needed for the cost of just one "little steel pucks" I could have gotten locally. Fred you da Man...
