rear brake squeal

Post by Martin Earl » Thu Jul 16, 2015 10:49 pm

Two thoughts:Are the brake pads properly installed? They can slip out of 'location' if you have had the rear wheel off. Some dirt/dust is worse than others and the disc needs a bit of touch up/cleaning. I think you should try cleaning your disc.Elevate you bike so the back wheel will spin freely. (several ways to accomplish that)(I strongly suggest) Put on chemical resistant gloves.Fold a paper towel-panel into 1/4's and spray brake cleaner (available at auto parts store, or WalMart, etc) onto the center of folded paper towel.NOTE: don't breath the fumes. gag. Grip the disc with the saturated cloth and spin the wheel.Repeat.Repeat again. You can also spray the cleaner directly on the wheel; but when you spray the left side of the disc, it splatters as youspray through the spokes. = more fumes. don't breath them either. wink. IF that doesn't work--For really bad cases, you may have to remove the caliper, and remove the brake pads. Consult your Clymer's to see how.Spay the pads with brake cleaner, and rub them on 300 grit wet/dry sand paper placed over a sheet of glass or other flat surface, in a figure 8 motion. It won't take very much...also,Clean the leading edge and trailing edge of the brake pads thoroughly. (DON'T breath the fumes!) Re-clean the disc while the brake caliper is removed.

Just recently, the rear brake has started to make a loud squealing noise when applied. I checked the pads, and there's at least half of the friction material left. Does anyone know how to cure this? Thanks in advance, Gerry

rear brake squeal replies

Thanks to Martin Earl and E. Hines for their replies. I used brake cleaner on the pads and disc, sanded the pads, and put some NAPA "Disc Brake Quiet" red goo on the backs of the pads. That did it, no more squeal.
