the cam advance update

Post by zoot » Thu Sep 04, 2014 10:26 pm

Ok Rev, as you wish. The update hodown on the cam advance. Details: 2006, 57K, Dynojet 140, 1st needle clip, pilot 2.5 out, 4k average elevation, foolish middle aged rider. As per the previous post, did the cam advance, found the midrange lean (stumbled midrange, worse with the airbox door off), so changed the needle to the 3rd clip. Ran sweet enough but felt rich and turned 47mpg. Turned the pilot in to 1.5 out. Results 50mpg in town, 52 on a loaded overnight through Central Oregon. Low gear 3K stumble was gone, acceleration smoother, more torque to push the rear sideways on the gravel, sweet acceleration, but a bit of an amphoric sound when loaded and accelerating hills. Opened the carby and set the needle to 4th clip. Cleaned up the mid range pull, but the initial fill up confused me at 80mpg. Confirmed that as a mistake (must have bumped the mileage knurl), as the weekend in town fill was about 50mpg, and today's in town fill (including 80+ high country dirt) was spot on 46mpg, 232 to reserve. She does pop sometimes slightly just at deceleration terminus, but I'm pretty sure she's well fueled in the running range. Engine temps well within normal limits. Haven't seen any rear fender soot. Selah still likes the cold morning air, but is more akin to liking the air any time of day and any temp. Throttle response is cleaner, engages nicely and pulls cleanly through the rpm without abrupt shelf. Pulls easily and happily to redline. With the new battery in, she fires nicely. More fun to ride. Is it worth the loss of mileage? Well if I run out in the wiles of the Lost Coast later this month, I'll let you know. But I ain't goin' back. Thanks, Todd Reply via web post denvowell@...?subject=Re%3A%20%5BDSN_KLR650%5D%20Long%20story%20and%20a%20riddle%2C%20wheel%20bearings DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com?subject=Re%3A%20%5BDSN_KLR650%5D%20Long%20story%20and%20a%20riddle%2C%20wheel%20bearings Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (15)

the cam advance update

Post by T » Tue Apr 21, 2015 5:45 pm

So here's to opening an old thread. Sold the 2006 and found a 2007 with way low mileage. Got it broke in with a Dyno Jet on the third clip and pilot out 1.75. Did the exhaust cam advance and then began tinkering with the carb to try to dial it in. Went leaner, then back to richer. Wound up about where I started and found the setup most disappointing. No real increase in power or torque felt as with the old bike. Ran a tank through it and found a 25% drop in fuel mileage. Ran offroad and didn't like the pull, so went back to the stock cam timing. Got my bike back. Significantly better pull, rev, response, etc. Why one bike did well and the other not so, is a mystery. Earlier comments of variances in cam location make me suspect of the differences in manufacturing tolerances. Either way, worked well for one, not at all for the other, and I'm happy to have my bike back. Todd

the cam advance update

No. Bike had set for seven years and never been ridden much. Cam alignment was arrows level with head when I started, and I confirmed that I had only advanced one tooth (and in the correct direction) when I set it back. t. On 4/21/2015 4:44 PM, SniperOne sniperone308@... [DSN_KLR650] wrote:

the cam advance update

Past owner ????? You did the advance, then went "back". Did you make sure it had not already been advanced, by the Past owner? (Spot on when you started) Could it be, You went to the 2nd, now back to 1 off, and feels like your 06, at 1 off. the cam advance update

Post by zoot . » Wed Apr 22, 2015 9:24 am

Nope. Past owner was a noob that only put 323 miles on the bike before leaving it in the garage at his summer home. Cam alignment was to spec when I took it apart. Exhaust markings with arrow down in front when adjusted, then back one tooth to alignment with top of cylinder head when returned. Counterclockwise rotation on the set (mentally racked that one a number of times to insure I'd not retarded it). Just different bike, different outcome. t. On 4/22/2015 6:25 AM, mark ward nomad59@... Past owner ????? You did the advance, then went "back". Did you make sure it had not already been advanced, by the Past owner? (Spot on when you started) Could it be, You went to the 2nd, now back to 1 off, and feels like your 06, at 1 off. On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 7:51 PM, "T zootpatutie@... Todd On 9/4/2014 8:27 PM, zoot wrote: Ok Rev, as you wish. But I ain't goin' back. the cam advance update

Post by Norm Keller » Wed Apr 22, 2015 1:03 pm

Any chance that the bike had an other cam installed?

A friend has a 2012 with which he does long road trips. He recently went from BC West Coast to Southern California, across Southern Texas to Florida, back to to Texas. They found it too cool in Texas so to Arizona, too cool so back to Southern California then back to BC. I think his assessment and sample size of fuel mileage is fairly solid? He found that advancing the exhaust cam dropped his mileage which went back up. The only one I've known so now yours is two.

Maybe variations in manufacture? Interesting and something I want to follow.
