During this past winter, when I was ordering and then going through my bike - (so things may have changed since then), Fred Hink at: http://www.angelfire.com/ut/moab/index.html recommended Galfer green pads for the front, and Galfer black pads for the rear. Those, and a stainless front brake line, (I did stainless lines front AND back, but the back probably didn't return its price in braking value), made all the difference in the world. It's said that the black pads wear faster than other types, and they may, but I have about 3500 miles on these pads, and they still look fine. I think the "secret" may be to use the front brake more, as you should anyway. Galfer Greens work extremely well, but my last set lasted only 1800mi.
This was mixed highway/muddy offroad. The EBCs I replaced them with have
been subjected to the same conditions but have lasted much longer, with
2/3 of the pads still to go.

Current favorite rear is the EBC FA67R. Performance and durability are similar to stock, it's cheap, and it's easy to find. The Galfer "black" compound works well but dies fast. On the front, the EBC FA130R is also similar to stock and long-lasting, but some people have reported that their front brake howls like a garbage-truck with these pads (myself included). The Galfer green seems to perform a little better than stock but, in my experience, rotor cleanliness becomes critical. This pad also died MUCH too fast in my opinion. Someone recently reported that DP makes their sintered HH+ Sport pad in the KLR's size, even though it isn't listed in their applications catalog. This pad has the potential to be an excellent choice for the KLR, and I look forward to trying it out. The stock pads are sintered, BTW. OK now you're scaring me!!! 1800mi on a set ob pads!!!! I have 8900 on my
stock pads. I am assuming that they DO need to be changed. How do you
measure the the wear or life left in them?
Thanks,

I think the spec is 1mm of pad material minimum. You can get down face-to-face with the brake calipers and see how much pad is left without unbolting anything. I am a mostly rear brake user. Before my trip to Alaska I installed
Galfer green front/ black rear. Black pads lasted 5,000 miles.
Needed new ones Thursday in Whitehorse. Kaw dealer said they would
be there Monday for $98. I Called Prince George. They had SBS in
stock for $38. I told them I would be there Saturday. I learned how
to use only the front, because one rear pad was down to the metal.
The front pads are still in good shape. I am practicing using the
front more.

I just changed my rear brake pads. EBC Carbon series for $25.99. EBC
part # FA 67X. Total time was 13 minutes. I removed the rear caliper,
loosened the cover over the master brake fluid reservoir, to loosen
the brake fluid screw-on cap. Then I popped out the old pads, pushed
in the caliper pot to increase the clearance for the new pads. Put in
the brake pad that is held in by fit, and spring clip and then the
other side. Jammed a flat blade in between the pads to open up the
gap a little more and fit the caliper back onto the rotor. retorque
all bolts and tighten up the cover and heat guard shield of the brake
fluid. Take for test ride. Done.
Waiting on Avon Distanzias next, will be ready for a long ride soon.
