brake pads

Post by Karl Raupp » Sun Jan 14, 2001 4:48 pm

Can anyone recommend a decent brake pad (front)? I'm in the middle of doing a full service on my bike, and I just discovered my front pads are COMPLETELY worn out. Lucky for me winter happened and I stopped riding, or else anything could have happened. There is just the tiniest sliver of pad left it's laughable - and my front brakes would have most likely failed in one more ride! You can see thru the material thats there!!! Anyway, I replaced my factory pads just 6 months ago (and my bike has been in storage since November)...(not becuase they were worn, but only because I got grease all over the pads, they had lots of life left in them) with EMGO branded pads - marked EBC FA130X and these pieces of crap completely wore out of me in no time at all. Unacceptable lifespan. Any recommendations? Galfer? Thanks! Karl

I have a limited opinion on brake pads, after almost having a major wreck riding 2-up in the rain with my wife with stock pads on my 81 BMW I soon switched to DunloPads, (now DP) I could care less that my rotor will last 20,000 miles less so that I can stop when I want to. The pads are great and still work very well even in pouring rain. If anybody has anything to say about a pad that works better I would like to hear about it so I could try it. So... How do those Dunlopads and TuffStops and other replacement pads compare to the stock pads in the "feel" department? Do these pads require less lever effort to get the same amount of braking action? RM

I have the EBC sintered pads, and I _didn't_ notice a big difference from stock. RM would concur on that. They squeal a lot, too. Kinda embarassing around town. C -- Dr. J. Kinda

I just put Galfer green pads on front & back, and a Fastline steel braded front brake line on. And they are much better than the stock pads. It took about 100 miles to brake the pads in good, but they have alot of grab now. I rode some mountain twisties today, and the brakes are much better than they were last week. Thanks Fred!! Nary a peep from my fronts. Still can't do two-finger stoppies. Or whole hand stoppies for that matter. I'm trying something else next time. They have plenty of braking power off-road, however. Still stock on the rear.
