The weld marks from the bearing turning on the balance shaft are visible inside the LH bearing. The short time misalignment damaged the RH bearing and shaft is also damaged so replacement of the LH bearing only would not have been suitable. Pieces of the bearing race and perhaps the cage went through some other bearings which also need doing.

Notice the later version piston (2013) which lacks the oil return groove and has only the (5) small oil return holes. Subject to greater expertise I continue to hold that this style piston is inferior to the older because it has less than 1/2 the oil return hole capacity.
Notice the apparent rust on the RH main bearing. This bearing shows damage from either corrosion based spalling, foreign material or combination. The roller main bearing appears to be in usable condition.
Lots more to report but tired now. <><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><> Norm, Thanks for sharing the pictures and info. I'm still on dial-up but did look at a couple of the pictures. It is pretty clear in photo #4 showing the step in the outer race. That would be a significant project to remove it from the "wrong" side. : ) Glad you got the cases split so you could discover all the other issues going on. At least the cam journals look ok from what I could see. Might be worth giving the tranie 3rd gear a good look as that seems to be the gear that Gen II owners have the most problems with. I think if this was my engine I would be replacing any bearing in question. My experience is it will never be easier than now. I don't do oil threads anymore but would be interested in hearing what oil was used in this engine along with the oil change interval. Just curious if it is known and I don't think this is an oil related failure. Best,

I also don't think this is oil related but am open to the possibility as obviously cannot form absolute conclusions based on evidence available to me. These links show what appears to be rust on the right hand main bearing: https://www.dropbox.com/s/6s7q5jytppwlnso/Right%20main%20bearing.jpg?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/8svmgzgrjuiuitk/Right%20main%20bearing2.jpg?dl=0 The material looks like rust when rubbed between my fingers. The bike sits for periods of time while he is on planting projects and then gets longer highway runs combined with back roads. I'm wondering if there's a corrosion component to the failure of some of the parts? I might take the failed parts to my friend's aircraft turbine shop and ask them if a NDT will provide any indications. ------ Original Message ------ From: "Jeff Saline" To: normkel32@... balancer shaft bearing failure 2013
Mark, interesting to knock these ideas around as one usually learns something even if it has to be done in the standard way.
I'm going back to revisit the idea of removing that bearing in frame but also accepting that the attendant misalignment following any failure will best point to replacing the other one also. If one caught that bearing before there were misalignment/ running out of the shaft, then it could be an option. If it were a local riding bike one wasn't willing to invest into or just going to sell right after repair, that might be an option but I couldn't do that to anyone so would only be an "eyes open" option for my own bike or for someone who understood the implications.
Anything else I should photo, measure?

I think a leak might come in just forward of the right main bearing. It would only take a small amount of coolant to move to the bearing to cause a rust issue. Nice to see how clean the inside of the engine is with the Rotella. Any chance of a photo of the shaft? Maybe it was there and I missed it. I wouldn't mind seeing a photo of the weight too. The short time misalignment damaged the RH bearing and shaft is also damaged so replacement of the LH bearing only would not have been suitable. Pieces of the bearing race and perhaps the cage went through some other bearings which also need doing. Here is a link to the folder of other photos: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/70l5l5mqptlumql/AAC0rah__d8MCVjLsD5g-ozMa?dl=0 Notice the later version piston (2013) which lacks the oil return groove and has only the (5) small oil return holes. Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . . . . . . . . .
