+1 on the MSF. I learned like probably a lot of people on here did, on a dirt bike in the woods. Dirt biking teaches skills that have come in handy on the street more than once, like how to handle unexpected obstructions, evasive maneuvers and how to recover from a slide without high-siding. The MSF will teach you great defensive driving skills and other skills directly related to staying alive around cagers. I ride a motorcycle daily in Los Angeles and my bikes are my primary commuting transportation. In addition to saving time and money on my commute I feel it benefits me by helping me arrive at work awake and alert. In time, you will also learn how to almost psychically predict when a driver is about to jump a lane without a signal or turn in front of you. A couple of tips I will give you from my L.A. driving experience: * be careful of painted lines... slippery. * ride in the left lane whenever possible, people have a tendency to pull out from side streets without looking. * increase your visibility * watch out for oil drips at intersections * be careful on new tires * gear, gear, gear. -Jeff Khoury

You'll learn things there that will stick with you the rest of your life. One thing I would like to add is to consider gearing down a bit, perhaps to a 14 tooth front sprocket. The stock gearing is a little tall for my taste, escpecially when trying to ride slow. I put 12,000 miles on with the stock gearing and geared down to a 14 tooth about 2000 miles ago. I can still easily exceed the speed limit, but it makes slow speed riding soooo much easier, plus starting from a dead stop is easier as well. Since you are starting out, I think I would also recommend a pair of bark buster lever protectors, as you'll probably drop it a time or two. It happens to the best of us so don't feel embarrased when it happens. Like my instructor told me many years ago when I was learning how to downhill ski, "if you don't fall down, you aren't trying hard enough." Hopefully you'll only fall down at a dead stop, or at low speed. I tried falling off a highway speed once. Trust me, you won't like it. :) Most of all, just be careful and have a lot of fun. Did anyone happen to watch South Park last night. I don't support the show, as it can be very crude, but every now and then I watch it. Last night they totally bashed obnoxious people on Harley's with loud pipes. I loved it. Now if the powers that be would open there eyes to the fact that most people are annoyed by those types. Maybe its time to enforce the law. Rick A17 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! I'm with you on getting rid of the mega-loud pipes on cruisers, also on sport bikes and even some of the singles that need the baffle put back in the aftermarket slip-on. I live in the mountains off a nice twisty road, on the weekends I hear all the loud bike fools. g

I can say this without hate as I have owned a HD with their own "Screamin' Eagle" accessory exhaust, which wasn't as loud as most aftermarket pipes. But, it was still not stock sounding and made me want to cut my engine and coast up the driveway to avoid p*ssing off the neighbors. Not an original statement &. I do not know the source - probably a t-shirt at a Honda shop: "Harley-Davidson: The most efficient means of converting gasoline to noise without making horsepower." Then I bought a GL1800 and remembered the dry-erase board outside the local HD service department. At the top was "The 100 H.P. Club" and listed bikes they modified with $$$$ of parts to get the magic 100 h.p.figure{Not including the V-rods}. It was goofy how much money it took! I thought about it and had my own t-shirt made at cafepress.com. On the back was a photo of my 'wing next to my cousin's Harley. On the front left pocket area was a small side view photo of a Gold Wing with the caption, "I joined the 100h.p. club. It was easy, too. I throttled back 7%." eddie

I watch South Park all the time. I know it's not an exercise in highbrow humor, and I'm good with that. Last night's episode was classic. I laughed until my cheeks hurt. Their crude humor hit the mark. Straight-piped bikes (no matter who manufactures them) are obnoxious, and the people who have them are simply attention seeking. I may go over to some h-d forums and see if they have a sense of humor. blumblablahblahblah ! -Jeff Khoury

It was hilarious, I couldn't stop laughing, everytime the HD guys got worked up, they all started making rumbling noises, man it was classic. Hopefully that episode will be on the internet so people that didn't see it can go have a look. g

Several years ago the NHRA had some (3?) Top Fuel Harley dragsters doing demonstration runs at Firebird Raceway here in Phoenix. I got some GREAT pictures of these bikes turning about 236 mph in just over 6 seconds. I heard several remarks from others watching, that they made LESS noise on those runs then the average H-D with aftermarket pipes does, and I concur!!! Cheers, Ed -
