It keeps the starter motor from working when the clutch is engage (lever out) and the transmission is in gear. It provides a path to ground for the starter relay (blue/red wire) when the clutch is engage (lever out) and the transmission is in neutral via the neutral switch (green wire) and also when the clutch is disengage (lever in) via the black/yellow ground wire. If you can find the part(s) and figure out how to install them the adjustment is loosen the two screws and slide the switch one way or the other then tighten the screws. Check the start motor operation with the clutch lever in and out, transmission in gear and in neutral. If it isn't working correctly or well slide it a bit more one way or the other until it does work correctly. If you want to by-pass it you connect the black/yellow wire to the blue/red wire. This will allow the starter motor to turn when the key is on and the starter button is pressed. It won't matter if the transmission is in gear or not nor will the clutch situation matter. If you can't remember to pull the clutch lever in every time you press the starter button it might not be a good idea to by-pass it. I had a clutch cable break in the exact NW corner of Oklahoma. I took my clutch assembly apart behind a C store in mega winds. Dropped the contact in the dirt. Finally found it and put the assembly back together again without the TWPOS. I realized I had to have it in order to start the bike. After I could start the bike, I had to find an incline to get rolling and drop into first gear clutch less. 250 miles later I made my way into Amarillo, trials riding (no stop) and speed shifting my way. My maiden voyage fly & ride from Virginia to New Mexico. I received my moto endorsement 2 days prior to flying to Richmond. After about 25 minutes of trying it fell out of my hand, landed on the street, the spring and the copper part from the switch flew away and I could not find it. Basically the solution became obvious lol... So I will unsolder the black/yellow wire and the blue/red one, connect them together and just put the assembly back together. I could not get my bike started without the ground. Hopefully once I connect the wires magic will happen. I love this baby!!!! -David <><><><><><><><><> <><><><><><><><><> David, In my Clymers manual, M474-3 on the cover upper right corner, it has a picture in Chapter 9, figure 42. That is on page 203. That switch only provides a ground for the starter relay. I don't think there is anything electrical that will be damaged, just a starter that won't work until the circuit is correctly repaired. If the blue/red wire is connected to the black/yellow wire the starter will work any time the key is on and the starter button is pressed. If the blue/red wire is connected to the green wire the starter will only work when the key is on, the transmission is in neutral and the starter button is pressed. If the green wire is connected to the black/yellow wire the neutral light will be on anytime the key is on no matter the selection of the transmission and the starter will not work. If the blue/red wire is shorted to ground it is the same as connecting it to the black/yellow wire. If the green wire is shorted to ground it is the same as connecting it to the black/yellow wire. If the black/yellow wire is connected to ground it is the same as connecting it to itself. I was doing ALMOST ok, dealing with the EARLY WINTER, & 1ft of snow etc, and excepting it may be a 4 months before any KLR Camping trips. THEN YOU, YA YOU DAVID, JUST HAD TO,......... When ever I head to North Carolina (E. of hickory area) to visit all my dads Family, I slow down in TN & VA, Even took an "extra" week this last time to get there. 10 instead pf 2 days. (ya I can SORE BUTT it in 1. WISER now thou.) WOW pic's I could even SMELL & FEEL the area, Just as you described. Words of Wisdom: (NOT mine, I learned from others hat I WAS DOING WRONG. LOL) Camping in the Rain. YES, Put down a Tarp, Not only for protection of the floor, (new tarp CHEAPER then new tent) But also for added INSULATION, BUTT THE TRICK, I took to long to learn, (from others) TUCK IT UNDER the edge of the tent about 2+ inches, So the WATER Does not collect off your tent and BUILD UP UNDER YOUR TENT. (Even Heavy Dew will also cause ISSUES. & you have to pack a wet tent.) I carry 3 tarps (min.) now 1. A "Foot print: goes under the tent. (I use a larger one since I have "vestibules" and after tucking, leave some out that I can use to stand on in socks, while putting on shoes boots etc. 2. As a Floor mat INSIDE, to collect the SAND, (water IF cloths, gear ETC ETC. are wet.) Just fold inside tent, and pull out all the above, and shake OUTSIDE the tent. 3. A LARGE Rip Stop type Material (light weight, packs small, yet strong) 20x14 min. Make a Canopy over everything, or tent, Mostly I stack all the gear I do not want in the tent And cover all gear & with it, Keeps stuff dry over night, (Dew or rain, BIRD CRAP lol) AND FROM EYES of people wondering by, from seeing EASY PICKINGS WHILE I SLEEP OR SHOWER, ETC. (If at a campgrounds etc) I was "planning" a trip for spring, OCEAN SIDE, East (N. Top of Maine, etc) OR West (farthest NW in WA & OR) etc To HUG A REDWOOD, ?? NOW? I took my clutch assembly apart behind a C store in mega winds. Dropped the contact in the dirt. Finally found it and put the assembly back together again without the TWPOS. I realized I had to have it in order to start the bike. After I could start the bike, I had to find an incline to get rolling and drop into first gear clutch less. 250 miles later I made my way into Amarillo, trials riding (no stop) and speed shifting my way. After about 25 minutes of trying it fell out of my hand, landed on the street, the spring and the copper part from the switch flew away and I could not find it. Basically the solution became obvious lol... So I will unsolder the black/yellow wire and the blue/red one, connect them together and just put the assembly back together. I could not get my bike started without the ground. Hopefully once I connect the wires magic will happen. It keeps the starter motor from working when the clutch is engage (lever out) and the transmission is in gear. It provides a path to ground for the starter relay (blue/red wire) when the clutch is engage (lever out) and the transmission is in neutral via the neutral switch (green wire) and also when the clutch is disengage (lever in) via the black/yellow ground wire. If you can find the part(s) and figure out how to install them the adjustment is loosen the two screws and slide the switch one way or the other then tighten the screws. Check the start motor operation with the clutch lever in and out, transmission in gear and in neutral. If it isn't working correctly or well slide it a bit more one way or the other until it does work correctly. If you want to by-pass it you connect the black/yellow wire to the blue/red wire. This will allow the starter motor to turn when the key is on and the starter button is pressed. It won't matter if the transmission is in gear or not nor will the clutch situation matter. If you can't remember to pull the clutch lever in every time you press the starter button it might not be a good idea to by-pass it.
