They planned to visit an REI store to purchase a locking carabiner for the young man's house key but arrived before the store had opened. Noticing a nearby chain hardware store, my friend decided to have a spare vehicle key cut without chip as a wallet spare to allow access to the vehicle by others while shopping and in case he locked his keys in the vehicle.   The were having the key cut in the hardware store, and about the time my friend happened to notice that the staff were all Latino, the young man spotted a carabiner display and loudly exclaimed. "Look at all the beaners!". Time froze. The guy cutting the key stopped. Everyone looked.   My friend began to loudly correct the young man along the lines of "No, look. They are called CARABINERS, "C", A", "R".....   He's certain that the man cutting the key understood and hopes that he explained to the other staff but still cringes at the recollection. Just when things are starting to become mundane, something occurs to add "interest" to ones life.
