The 705s do quite well on grooved pavement. The best I've tried so far. -Jeff Khoury

It lasted 8k miles and has more to go but the fun factor is long gone. It's almost as sawtoothed as the front was at 7k miles when I replaced it with a TKC80. The sawtooth effect is on the shoulders from trailbraking into corners. Since I don't do enough offroading the TKC80 was wishful thinking but I'm hoping to get at least 7k out of it on mostly pavement. But most reviews say the rear TKC80 is only good for about 4k miles, which makes it a bit spendy. The combination of new TKC80 front and well-worn K761 rear is not stable at speeds greater than 75mph. The bike dances on the interstate rain grooves like Carmen Miranda. So far the set of Pirelli Scorpion A/T were the best on the slab and in the twisties. The K761s were not bad for the money when new but I was made painfully aware of how much I had slowed down on them last time I did a group ride. I was the leader and Cliff who video'ed me said he was using his brakes more than usual. At the time the front had 6k and the rear about 7k . So, what to get for the rear? I want a TKC80 but figure if I get one I'll just be asking the same question again in 4k miles. I hear the Distancias are even worse than the Slipsters in anything loose. The K761 was not bad for the money. I liked the rear much better than the front. Might have to try a Shinko 705 now. -- ian http://www.scarletfuries.com http://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Scarl ... 1218125931 Re: Tires?< http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DSN_KLR65 ... They're very good tires. They are the best "high-speed handlers" of any tire I've had on the KLR and they're fairly good on fire roads, etc. You can literally drag pegs on the slab without any compunction at all. They last pretty well but not as well as the K761. Here's a pic of their dry handling. :-) http://www.facebook**.com/photo.**php?fbid=**2860408705624&**l=c887ddef6d < http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid= ... c887ddef6d > I've never run the Distanzias. -Jeff Khoury ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Criswell" > Sent: Monday, March 12, 2012 3:47:00 AM Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Tires? Funny a tire thread should start. The shop was a bit slow after lunch, so I went home and got the KLR to change the front tire out. (previously had done the rear) I just looked in my records and the Avon Gripster that came off lasted just over 9,500 miles. That's 99% road miles with a 190# rider and 30psi in the tire. The tread was still above the wear bars but looking a bit "ramped" on some of the blocks. Also, the rubber was starting to get cracked a bit. Still, It rode/handled fine. I know they have their detractors. But, I could've honestly and safely gotten 10k out of that Avon. And if I venture down a gravel road now and then, I'm not fearful, either. eddie [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Hi all. My 2008 KLR650 needs tires for 90% street riding. I'm 175 pounds and don't carry any passengers. Any recommendations? Thanks. TC ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com

Price vs. Performance? Kenda K761 Shinko 705 Both handle well on road and last a long time. The 761s last a bit longer, and always run the fronts at max pressure to minimize scalloping. -Jeff Khoury

I agree on the Avon Gripsters, I recently wore out a pair and this time added the Avon Distanzas. But, the Gripsters were great as long as you are mostly on pavement, I would not go off road on Gripsters. Eddie M

I agree on Gripsters. If you hit mud, gravel or sand, they become slipsters. I talked to a tire rep at a bike show once and he said they used to sell a lot of Gripsters to flat track racers. Probably great for broad sliding. I like the Meefos Fred sells. But the best dual sport tire I have tried for serious stuff (mud, gravel, sand) are the Dunlop 606's. Criswell Sent from my iPad

I agree with the Gripsters and the Mefos. My wife and I, on 2 KLR's, are in Teguantepec, Mexico, just south of the state of Oaxaca. We've been on the road for 2 months in Mexico/Central America. We have the Gripsters on our bikes. They are super on pavement and a pretty good on dirt. But as already said, when it is wet they are the slipsters. We have about 4,000 miles on them now and they are still almost new. In Colorado, I love the Mefos for on and offroad. They are a great mountain tire.

What is it about these tires (Mefo Explorer) that you like so much? What is it that makes them worth $170.00 , or even $149.50? For the price of one rear tire, I can buy a pair of D606, or three Kenda k270s, Each of which will go 9500 miles. Does the Mefo last 25000 miles, or what? Thet's a rhetorical question; I already know they go 6-10,000 miles, just like their $50 competition. So what is it?
