Blacksheep - search the archives, there's loads of info about them, most of it saying they're pretty good! --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "blacksheep337" wrote:

I was planning to have my local shop put on a new back tire to replace my current IRC GP110 (5.10) which has at least 5000 miles on it. It's not down to the wear bar just yet but getting close. Anyway, the shop only has the GP110 in 4.60 (width?). I doubt that I'd notice the difference with my 80:20 pavement/dirt riding but wanted to hear from other listers. I've never run a GP1 on my bike but that seems like a good alternative that I've heard other mention. I'm not sure they have it in stock now anyway. Anyone see the Sierra passes article in the latest Rider with Clem? Nice little writeup but he keeps screwing up highway 4 with 40. I'm OK with that as long as it keeps the traffic down. I've had a number or rides over them the last two summers and last week's over Sonora in high cold winds was chilling when dressed for summer. I did find out how many layers I could fit under my mesh jacket. Thanks, Dale A15 __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mostly street with pretty basic dirt. The Avon Distanzia is my preferred. They are a tubeless style so are not the easiest to put on, but other then that they are pretty nice. -- Doug Herr doug@...

I concur with Doug - You may also want to consider putting an Avon Distanzia in the rear and an IRC-GP110, mounted backwards, up front. It has been an excellent set-up for me. I am going w/ an IRC-GP110 in the rear once my Distanzia wears out, but only because I am doing just a bit to much riding off-road in situations where the Distanzia is a bit overwhelmed (muck, granite gravel, and powdery sand-silt). The Kenda 761 is another nice option at the Distanzia/Tourance/Gripster end of the spectrum. They are a lot cheaper than the Distanzia or Tourance and seem just a little less sticky on pavement (especially in the wet, where the Distanzias are really great) but a little better on dirt -- it's a more Trailwing-like tread pattern, with larger grooves between the tread blocks. No mud experience to report yet. The Distanzias were basically useless in any sustained stretch of mud. I'm hoping the Kendas will be a little better. I've only put about 300 miles on mine so far but I am very happy with them. Just like the Distanzias or tubeless-type Gripsters, they are quite difficult to mount. I put about 9,000 miles on the Distanzias I had on before the K761s and I was happy with them, too; but they are not cheap (the Tourance is even more expensive)! Fred at Arrowhead stocks the K761 (and most other things you'd want for your KLR). -- Thor Lancelot Simon tls@... Concur w/ Thor on Mud and Distanzias - what a fuc#ing tank slapping piss/shi# my pants experience. It was the last straw for the front Distanzia (Oh, if anyone wants to buy it, it is for sale - I have 60 miles on it - the center seam and rubber-mold injection risers are still present - great street and MILD dirt front tire, but forget more than mild dirt surfaces). As to the rear - I still like it for mid-mild dirt work - great for flat tracking and nicely readable in a power-slid, trustworthy on the street, including wet surface, but when the dirt gets sandy or worse, like riding on roller-bearing gravel - Geez, it will accelerate your digestion in a hurry :-\ Mike Torst A16 aka lasvegasrider -----Original Message----- From: Thor Lancelot Simon [mailto:tls@...] Sent: Sunday, September 19, 2004 3:54 PM To: dsn_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [DSN_klr650] tires

IRC-GP110 tire sizing is not fully Metric - Look for 5.10 x 17 for the rear, and 3.00 x 21 for the front. Mounting the tire up front backwards reduces wear, and it sticks a bit better. The design is so unique and I, and others, like it a bunch. Oh forgot - tire longevity - My front IRC-GP110 -reverse mounted tire has over 4k on it - it looks like a new one w/ softer lug edges and still has many thousands to give.( Those of you going to the Eastern Sierra ride that Pat is put on next weekend can look at it - (Yawn for the vets). Air pressure options - on the street at 35+- psi, in the dirt at a bit under 20 ( front tire). I am still burning off my Distanzia rear tire, and have a new IRC-GP110 rear ( 5.10x17) for the rear. After riding with Pat in the Sierra run on the 24th of Sept, and riding a bit of a loop to Reno ( If plans work out) before I get back to Vegas, I will take my then dis-mounted rear wheel and new ( in-the-trunk IRC-GP110 rear skin) back to CycleGear for a free mount and a $5 dollar balance ( I bought the IRC rear skin at CycleGear a few days ago). BTW - all tires that a rider buys from CycleGear retail outlets include free mounting - many riders start shopping for stuff at our Vegas CycleGear shop by bringing their dis-mounted wheels in to the counter, picking the replacement skin, and laying the new tire against the wheel, pay, go out and screw around, and then pick up their wheel (s) and go back to home.
