loosing power?

Post by mark ward » Sun Oct 26, 2014 6:44 pm

Coming hm (MI.) from NC. I was on the freeway out running a storm. (70+-)
The bike seemed to slow down, unless I gave it more throttle. (LEVEL GROUND)
I locked my hand (grip) to the side, using the Mirror post etc., so I knew My hand was not moving.
Yet my speed was reducing, down to 45. (3 miles from, a Motel for the night.)
The next day, All seemed fine. Even the last 350 miles hm., fine, and since hm. fine. (250-300 more, "city" riding)
Thoughts?  (YA OPINIONS Too LOL)
PS. Yup Did great, 2 days of dodging the rain, until the last 15 miles, then DUMPED ON. LOL

Have you done the T-mod to the pink carb drain hose? If not, then riding in heavy rain or with standing water will run the carb out of air. When that pink vent hose get plugged (e.g with water) the bike loses power. Yup T-mod done. This was the night before the rain caught up with me. On Sunday, October 26, 2014 9:04 PM, "'John Biccum' johnbiccum@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

loosing power?

Post by Fred Hink » Mon Oct 27, 2014 7:09 am

Did you recently fill your gas tank when this power loss occurred?  The gas cap vents sometime gets plugged and with the smaller amount of air in the tank when it is full will act quicker to not let sufficient amount of fuel to flow causing your temporary power loss.  The gas cap vent is a bunch of little springs and ball check valves that restrict the movement of air (and fuel), Thanks EPA.  Sometimes these check valves (vents) work too well.  Cleaning them with compressed air usually does the job and if not disassembly will allow a complete cleaning.  Be careful as it is easy to loose the small springs or ball check valves.   I have seen this on another bike ((not KLR) when the bike was cold acted normally and would operate normally driving but as soon as the bike was at operating temps and then parked for a short time would act like it was running out of fuel.  What we found was that the vacuum line to the fuel petcock would act normally when the engine was cold because the line was stiff.  As soon as the engine warmed up the heat would rise softening the vacuum line and causing it to droop and would kink off the vacuum.  The vacuum port on the carburetor was vertical like on the KLR.  Fixing this problem was easy by cutting off the kink and adding a zip tie or two to hold up this line.  The reason this issue never showed up while driving was that there was enough air movement under the tank to keep the engine heat away from this line but as soon as it sat with a warm engine then the problem would occur again.  Not saying that this is your problem but would be worth a look to see if your vacuum line looks like it might have been kinked at the vacuum port on the carburetor.   The fuel petcock diaphragm will eventually get a hole or thin spot in the rubber diaphragm causing a loss of fuel flow but this seldom (never) fixes itself.  The only cure for this is replacement of the diaphragm or the block-off kit.  The petcock diaphragm is a safety issue.  Some get by with Religiously manually shutting off the petcock and never have a problem.  I stress safety first and it only takes one time to forget to shut off your petcock and a fuel leak will happen to all carbureted bikes eventually.  Fuel leaks are never a good thing.
