Issues of memory, and other such myths- Aging is a lab experiment; sometimes you are the scientist, some days you are the lab-rat.Memory at some point, is a function of aging. cough...60th birthday in 30 days...I think that's right. In recognition of memory and aging issues--I have began to put an 'out of service' tag, ie key in the ignition through a note to myself.ADD OIL is one I use immediately after pulling the drain plug. ah, if I remember. grin. Not that this has any 'bearings' on being frozen out of Paul's contest. shrug. revmaaatin.

long story and a riddle, wheel bearings

Post by tenntimtwo@yahoo.com » Thu Sep 04, 2014 5:05 pm

I always freeze mine too. I left s set for my Concours in there for 6 months or so once...I think I may have ordered a second. Found the first set when I put the second set in the freezer... The following week, the bearings came in and I took a good look at removing the old bearings. Well, the bearing in the hub closest to the sprocket (not the one in the sprocket carrier) had totally disintegrated, leaving only the outer race in place. This outer race was difficult to remove. I couldn't get at it with a punch from the other side because there was a shoulder in the way. Eventually, I decided that I needed a bearing removal tool and I bought a slide hammer set. Another week or so goes by. (Luckily, I have 3 other motorcycles to ride). Finally, I go down last night with my new slide hammer and pull out the old bearing race. The other two bearings weren't a problem to remove with a punch. Time to install the new bearings. Now, where did I put them? I looked everywhere, on the bench, around the shop, in the truck, in the garage, in the bedroom, the kitchen, the saddlebags, the tankbags. I couldn't find them anywhere! Dang, I guess I'll re-order the bearings and if I find the originals I'll return them. Suddenly, I remembered where I put them. So, the riddle is, where is a sort-of logical place that I put the bearings that would be easy for me to forget, and not obvious to look for? long story and a riddle, wheel bearings

Post by Norm Keller » Thu Sep 04, 2014 10:57 pm

I recommend threading a grease nipple into the steering head tube on the right side, about 1/3 of the way up. It takes a bit of grease to fill the frame tube the first time but after that just a pump or two. Several owners have said that they find the front to be more stable due to the damping effect of the grease.
