hot running cure.
After setting all 4 valves to the lose side > LE .011 RE .010 LI .008 RI .009 < and advancing the exhaust cam one tooth on my 37+ thousand mile '00 KLR , I notice it was running a bit hotter than normal on these 90 to 100 degree afternoons we had been having. So, mixed a solution of dawn dishwashing liquid and water ( about 30/70 ) and sprayed the radiator really good and let is soak for about 15 mins and then sprayed it again. about 10 mins later I put the water hose to it with nozzle on a straight stream and really gave it a proper spray job. Lots of bug body parts in the driveway. Plus the dirt from the back gravel roads I habitant down here lots.
Results, temp running back where it use to be mosing about the back roads in the 40 to 60 mph range. Still liking the bit of increase torque with the cam advance and now have around 200 miles since doing it.
Still lovin my old KLR after 14 years since buying it.

Radiator cleaner......
While there is stronger stuff, (I have a gallon for AC cleaning) at Home depot etc. you can get a Foaming cleaner made for AC Coils.
CAUTION! To much Water pressure can bend coils etc. or force stuff in firmer.
What I (we) like to do (after soaking & AIR FIRST) is use a Air/water spray gun. (IF you have a compressor or portable air tank)
CHEAP at Harbor freight.
Its a Air hose spray nozzle "wand", that has a small hose attached that siphons water (soapy?) with the air, so a strong "AIR/MIST" Blast out the dirt.
PS. Thanks for reminding me, I do Air conditioners a few times a yr. but forgot to do the KLR.
OLD saying. The Barbers son, is the last kid in town to get a hair cut.(All others pay and dad wants to rest after a long day.)

hot running cure.
Our city water pressure is about 50 at best. No danger. I do our ac coils twice a year. I do have and air siphon nozzle . Just didn't think of it. Think I'll do the 1250S bandit with it when I go back outside. It's due also. Thanks for the reminder.

Still lovin my old KLR after 14 years since buying it.On Aug 25, 2014, at 7:16 AM, "achesley43@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

OK Now you are just trying to Frustrate me,........Don't make me come...... clean all your coils for you. LOL
True, Most don't have HIGH psi, but still need to be careful, that 5/8 hose at 50psi being forced out a reduced to a 1/8 inch nozzle has quite a blast to it.
(Just ask my 10yr old grand son, he got me in the side of my head/face the other day. LOL)

hot running cure.
As a relatively new old KLR650 owner (recently acquired and been sorting out a 2002 with a little over 6k miles)...
I just enjoyed the part of the thread where he says "Still lovin' my old KLR after 14 years since buying it."...
That's what I'm looking forward to saying - I want the bike to outlive me...

OK Now you are just trying to Frustrate me,........Don't make me come...... clean all your coils for you. LOL True, Most don't have HIGH psi, but still need to be careful, that 5/8 hose at 50psi being forced out a reduced to a 1/8 inch nozzle has quite a blast to it. (Just ask my 10yr old grand son, he got me in the side of my head/face the other day. LOL) On Monday, August 25, 2014 3:04 PM, "Ron Criswell roncriswell2@... Still lovin my old KLR after 14 years since buying it.![]()

hot running cure.
Good reminder to all of us. Thanks!
Another radiator trick is to place some fiber glass or plastic window screen in front of the radiator. Don't strap it tight to the rad, just hang it from the top and allow it to stay loose in front so that it can wiggle around. The screen will prevent bugs from wedging into the radiator fins because of the different sizing and shape of the holes in each. It will also act as a cushion to reduce the impact of rocks. Old Yukon trick.

hot running cure.
Up here in Colorado we usually have much fewer insects than more humid parts of the country. Last June during my 3 week foray into the deep South Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida - I was surprised that I encountered few insects on windshield and helmet. Was this an unusual summer ?

If you were in the Central South Texas, almost considered high desert country. You would really have to get to way more water filled places to really have a super bug population like East Texas. Witness Alaska and Canada in the summer. Sheesh. Really, the worst time is right at dusk for a few hours and dawn for the same time.
Last time I came in just after dark on the Bandit 1250S I could barely see out my visor due to mosquito corpses.
Then , we have that Brazilian Fruit Fly period twice a year. Not as bad the last couple years. Thankfully, in their 3 weeks of committing suicide on anything moving, they have their attached babies come loose and die and the young ones go back in the ground for about 6 months.

I went riding in South Dakota in early July with Rev. Bugs were pretty bad. Never understand my Harley buddy that likes to ride (quote) Free meaning T shirt, sun glasses and jeans. Wonder if he has ever been hit by a grasshopper in the forehead at 70 mph (heh). Been dry in a lot of Texas lately. Maybe means less bugs???
