for sale- 2006 ktm 950 adventure, north central fla.
Some particulars-
2006 KTM 950 Adventure
18 K miles
$5600
Located in North Central Fla. (between Ocala and Gainesville)
I've owned it 4 years, I'm the 3rd owner
Reason for sale: Wifey hates this bike, I'm tired of hearing her asking me to sell it
I know, that sounds lame, but it's the troofers
I bought it from an inmate (ADVRider) who lived in charm city (Baltimore). I drove up there in my van and brought it back to Fla. Wanted to do a fly n ride but the bike wasn't roadworthy. It was experiencing the starter torque limiter issue that year and the 05' model had, despite the PO's dealer supposedly 'fixing' it which harkens back to how do we know what we know
I don't want to get off on a tangent about this but I did open the door=:-) KTM has/had a fix for this...upgraded parts. Newly designed torque limiter, and a different idler gear (I think that's what it's called) but the idler will work with the OEM torque limiter as well as the updated part
When the dealers install the new upgraded torque limiter, the VIN is entered into KTM's database as being corrected, so when anyone has a dealer do a search on upgrades for a particular VIN, it will be shown the upgrade was done, but when the PO took it in to his dealer, unbeknownst to him, the dealer installed another OEM torque limiter and claimed they made the upgrade. The starter was acting up and the PO was up front about it, and why I decided to drive up there and bring it home in my van
Anyways, I removed the gen cover and upon removing the starter torque limiter and bringing those parts into a KTM dealer in my area that had the upgrade kit in stock (which I ended up buying), I could see why the claimed repair failed...the OEM torque limiter was used for the repair, and not the upgraded part. I have some pics in my KTM flickr set showing this repair
https://www.flickr.com/photos/26137108@N04/sets/72157624498770621/
Plus other pics of the bike for you to peruse. The PO included a set of Hepco Becker cases and a set of 1430 Pelican cases he fabbed to fit onto the OEM (KTM) rear bag/crash bars/racks. FWIW the PO used the Pelicans...I prefer and have used the Hepco Becker bags. The HB bags are wider but I like to pack a lot of stuff when I go anywhere, or be able to bring it home with me, locked securely. I really like the HB bags. They lock to the rear crash bars/racks and the bag lids have two locks for each bag. Same key fits all 6 bag locks
What else do you want to know?...I pulled the swing arm shortly after buying it. had the OEM factory grease, still looked good but I cleaned everything in diesel, dried and re-lubed with Red n' Tacky. There are photos of me installing a new DID SVM chain but I decided to go with a ZVMX DID chain instead. I put a top of the line rear sprocket on with the new chain (aluminum hub, steel ring), went with OEM counter shaft sprocket. Gearing is same as the Super Enduro gearing. It's still fairly tall IMO but works on the trails I've ridden. I also installed a set of spark arrestors in the after market cans one of the PO's had installed. Jetting is rich and OEM. I purchased a Head2Wind jet kit but never installed it, which goes with this bike, as well as any other parts I [purchased for it and have not yet installed for the aforementioned $5600 purchase price
That said, anyone wanting to purchase this bike from me (as is) is welcome to ride it beforehand, but, I require a $5600 cash deposit. Return the bike after a cursory ride, I'll return your deposit. No exceptions. We live 30 minutes from GNV and will be happy to host a fly n ride
This bike is a runner but needs tuning to get the last tenth out of it. Besides the jet kit I have new spark plugs for it, the spark plug tube seals (O-rings), a water pump rebuild kit. It's still on the OEM water pump amazingly but I've heard of OEM water pumps for this bike going 30 K + miles
I've ridden this bike approx. 4 K miles in the almost 4 years I've owned it. It's ready for an oil change. Wouldn't hurt to check valve clearance when you get it back home. I've flushed the brake fluid on both ends. I don't recall replacing brake pads when doing the brake fluid R&R but I had the pads off, cleaned up the backings and used anti-sieze on the pins and pad backing plates
I removed the clutch slave, disassembled, flushed, refilled with new fluid and flushed, refilled the clutch oil jet as gear changes were a little snatchy when I got it, but the flush and fill and look see did the trick. Gear changes since are smooth as silk
I have not touched the suspension, and needs attention, in that it's time for a fluid refresh. I have not disassembled steer stem bearings but I have checked the play and have not noticed any notchiness or other abnormality. It is time to go through it however, clean and re-grease (steer stem bearings). I bought a battery for it 2011 and it's time again. It's not unheard of for these bikes to go through batteries every two years. I keep it on a Deltran trickle charger. Admittedly, I don't ride this bike much. Most of it's use is done on my property (I live on a 50 acre piece). I have a couple rottwielers that like to chase me when I ride it so I'm hard on the battery. IOW's, and as far as the battery goes (it's charge condition). If I leave the trickle charger off, she'll likely start 7 or 8 X's then the battery is flat, but that's riding it around the house. If I do more lengthy work with it, the battery's charge will stay up and the trickle charger isn't needed but I don't often use it for lengthy rides, and partly why it's for sale. I've always said, if you don't ride it, sell it. Hence, it's for sale
As I'm listing it for sale on this KLR forum, for those of you not familiar with the big KTM (Twin) enduros, this is not the fuel sipper your KLR is. Plus, you need to feed it premium fuel. If you can't buy premium fuel, there is a wire to disconnect for the ignition mapping to run accordingly under the seat. Just trying to keep it real. This is not an economical bike to ride concerning MPG. It can be tuned to get better mileage and I'll let you do your own research for those numbers. If I rode gingerly I'd see 33 MPG. That said, you can do better with the Head2Wind jet kit and taller gearing but I have the gearing set up for slower speeds and not for slab work
I had the stock saddle re-worked to accommodate my 32" inseam. It's more the height of a KLR saddle now, and covered in suede, originally black suede which has now faded to an olive green. I keep this bike in a locked garage when not riding it but it has seen some sun so the seat cover has faded some. While mentioning cosmetics, this is a nice looking bike and has not seen rugged use yet the fuel tank decals (both tanks) have bubbled some and quite characteristic for this model. KTM sprayed clear coat over their tank decals and they will with time bubble a bit
I changed the stock mirrors to a fold away mirror (both sides) I bought from a KTM after market specialist (Black Dog). I also installed the Black Dog side stand relocation side stand kit. Their (Black Dog) side stand kit uses the OEM side stand but it moves it off the factory engine cases. I put new tires and tubes on it when I got it. with only 4 K miles on the tires, both have plenty of life left. I'm running the Mefo Super Explorer on the rear with a Pirelli Scorpion on the front, both 50/50 type tires. I have ridden this off road in Big Sandy (Ocala Natnl Forest) These tires seem to work as well as most I've used for sand work while getting me around on paved roads
I've heard the Dunlop tire works the best for most off road work with this bike but I've only run what I have on there now and have been happy witgh this combination. Just checked rear tire tread depth in a few spots and see 8+-10mm tread depth FWIW but don't recall nor have notes for what that tire had new (tread depth)
Contact me on or off list for any info you want on this bike I haven't stated here. Needless to say but if you were wondering...title is clear and in hand
Best,
Jake

I have some video of KLR riders burying their KLR at the beach. I would ride with them, except I usually have an appointment to eat a bar of soap as it is less painful. But some can't resist and go places where I fear to tread.Like in a Jeep, or 'jeep'.
I know some of you like the 4x4 stuff...allows you to get stuck in more remote places. Then there is the winch: drag yourself to more remote places, then get stuck.John B passed through here last summer and told me about riding at MOAB, where a one day circuit on the KLR typically takes 3 days in a 'jeep'. Huh? I did not understand that ratio, until I drank the Jeep KoolAid.Then I began to understand the difference in speed, and really appreciate some of the difficulties of 4x4 sport, cough, ownership.
Then there is this guy...who just wants to do a little fishing.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEYaTscCDIgI suspect the outcome was less than favorable. m1

free to good home
I found a new stock muffler on the EBay for less than a hundred and will no longer need my de-tweetied old one. It is not loud, but louder than I like, and I was told it passed a forest road sound check for a group ride with no problem.
Free to good home, just pay for shipping. Takes ten minutes to install, including fishing your tool kit out and putting it back, unless you drop your side cover bolt in the grass.
Shipping would be from 37354, Madisonville, East Tennessee. Or you can swing by and pick it up. I know there are a thousand KLRs in the area
