Twas I who recently reported that I murdered my 2+ year old Wal Mart slosh battery.  I confessed that I both left it on the trickle charger too long AND failed to check the water level.  I have a follow up question please,  "On average, how often do you all check the water level on your slosh batteries?"   I realized that this question does not have a "one size fits all" answer, but, I am asking in general how often should I be checking the battery water level? Let me add, at the risk of being dissed, I find the KLR's battery placement to be a royal pain in the A** to get to.  Man, could they not have placed it in a more problematic place?  Anyone else feel that way?  Is that why many go to the maintenance free battery?   What is the most irksome is that the wiring is directly on top of the battery.  And, if one ever needed to jump start it, "For Git About It."  And, please spare me the "well on the XYZ bike it is even worse."  I am no mechanic, by any stretch of imagination, and I concede that a seasoned mechanic might disagree about the KLR's battery location.  Again, I decline to sign my name, I am getting hate male and death threats...................... gee it was only a battery?

The battery location: sucks. After you do it a few times, it still sucks; you just get faster at it. HINT:If you don't bolt your seat on, and if you leave the side covers off, you can remove a battery in < 3 minutes. If you use all the bolts, it will take you (I use all the bolts; it varies if I use the side panels. If you don't bolt your seat on, do yourself a favor and use some big pieces of Velcro to snug it down...especially if you are going to tow your bike! Battery maintenance. When: EVERY TIME U CHANGE THE OIL. or 1500 miles. especially when the riding temps are above 90F+. I have had Walmart batteries (sic) wet-lead-acid batteries last ~4 years. Batteries were serviced every oil change, bat-tendered ~every 2 weeks at storage temps down to -40F.If I failed to do the service, and the water level dipped into the 'plates', a new battery would be in my future. sigh. One exception to the above:If you cold storage where there is no electricity, remove the batteries, store at 50F+ (I place them in a plastic bucket) and still use the battery tender ~every 2 weeks. Is there a better way? Gel cell (sic) technology is an alternative. shrug.The above recipe--It is what works for me.ymmv-- sometimes you get a faulty battery and it won't matter what you did.... revmaaatin.

  I have a 2008, I put 350Miles every week for several years.  I added water every month in the summer and every 6-8 weeks in the other seasons.  The individual cells do not loose the same amount of water.  San Joaquin Valley, CA. Hi,  I've had better luck with AGM (sealed) batteries in motorcycles than Lead-acid or Lithium.  tip-overs, power over-drains, and low cells (due to infrequent maintenance), have gotten the lead acids.   over-charging, over-draining, and direct shorts have all significantly shortened spendy Lithium life.   AGMs have survived all of the above and yielded great RELIABILITY and battery life.   - StoneTail

After I track you down, and Worse then a death threat, Put A Harley sticker on your KLR. Jump starting. I made light duty "jumper" (recharge) cables out of simple 12g wire. (Like Lamps, (but heaver G) etc. use. (5ft. rolls up small) I used 2 Sets of connector's on each end,  Aprox 8 inchs in, I installed the basic 2 prong quick connect like most battery tenders, etc. use, So you can plug right into your tender plug, AND on the other bike if they have one. 2nd. ALSO 1 set of mid. sized Alligator clips, on each end, that also have the other end of the tender plug. Disconnect the Alligator ends, & Use Both tender type plugs, OR leave on 1 set (or both)  of the Alligator ends to attach to battery post/bolts On a Car or bike. NO!!! You can NOT "Jump" with the fine wire, but if left on for a few minutes It will slowly RECHARGE a battery. Benefit over Regular Jumpers, THE TENDER TYPE ENDS, CAN BE HOOKED UP TO A BIKE WITHOUT GETTING AT THE BATTERY.   most tenders are exposed)  CAUTION!!!   For the UN-KNOWING,   ALL BIKES (any J. cables)  If using a car/truck,  NEVER! Just So. Solves several electrical dilemmas with viable options. Good point about "jumping" through those small 12v fuses. Direct jumping can't be done through small wires & fuses. They can't handle the current & something will fry instantly. However, you can "recharge" a weak battery by directly connecting battery to battery thru small bore (10-12 ga.) wiring. Do NOT employ the starting circuit of either bike while "recharging" in this fashion AND pay close attention to whether your "recharge" cables are getting too warm. - Happy Travels, StoneTail
