dip your bike?

Post by pwhatfourever@sbcglobal.net » Mon Jun 23, 2014 6:18 pm

Has anyone tried plasti dip on their KLR plastics?  I was thinking I might try this instead of trying to refinish my faded red plastics. These two sites have quite a bit of info on the spray can variety.  The first website shows a variety of cars with the treatment, The second website shows how it worked for someone on a Suzuki DR650. https://www.dipyourcar.com/examples.html Plasti Dip Your Bike | Product Review - Always Broke | Moto Vlogger Plasti Dip Your Bike | Product Review - Always Broke | M... Sounds like you are searching for sparkle-farkle. cough. Never did the 'dip'; I have read others bought bulk (same stuff as a hand tool dip/paint) with mixed results. I suspect the preparation was to be faulted, if any failure/disappointment occurred. Others have used bed-liner from a rattle can; proper preparation is a must....If you must sparkle farkle, I would suggest bed-liner. List member Mike F is a 'plastics-expert' and he might know the secret ingredient to make it stick the longest. OPINION ALERT!!!!AS my garbage can green fads, I--just, Ride the bikes down a wet gravel road---ostensibly to change the gasthus, spray them with road grime and save the money for something like clutch cables I then leave on the work bench when traveling 2Ksmiles from home. shrug. IMO, The KLR is a pig; a very loveable pig, but nevertheless, a pig.Yes Virginia, I do tidy bowl my pigs--The bikes do get a 3.2/4.0 cleaning when the tires are changed, a chain is replaced, end of year, and if it is ridden through a hog waller. However, use as little silk as necessary, BUT, add etching primer to any bare metal to slow down corrosion. Speaking of washing pigs; I do clean the wheels more often than anything else, especially between the spokes to check for cracks. Another location to check fastidiously, is the back bone, radially between the two points where the subframe bolts to the backbone.Mine (57K) and one other ( Sparkle-farkle on a KLR only leads it to being a road bike, and that is a sad, sad, waste of a KLR. revmaaatin.

If you've got faded red plastics use a heat gun and a few coats of turtle wax.  I've done it to several, it works good, its cheap, and is repeatable a few years later. If you are really interested in the technique I will hammer it out again in an email.  If you're not just say so and I will save my tired old fingers the work. Thanks for the pointers, Rev. Explains why I haven't found any serious articles on how to clean a KLR. LOL.  I did at least learning not to power wash my o-ring chain. Paul Sent from my iPhone

There was a WV poster from the 2003-2004 time that did the bedliner spray makeover of his KLR.Those that were here during that time frame might remember his KLR with a M-60 "mounted' over the handle bars. Fred, you remember the guy? His bike was bed liner sprayed and seemed to work quite well; no knowledge how well the M-60 worked out...revmaaatin.

Hmmm Rev? Was the bedliner the rubberized variety or the stuff that I believe is maybe epoxy/fiberglass that comes in multiple colors? As for the M-60, that is the stuff dreams are made of, LOL. I think I'll stick with my 9mm. I can still afford to shoot it occasionally. Paul On Tuesday, June 24, 2014 4:33 PM, "Martin Earl mjearl4@...
