Following Mr. Saline's reply, I'm afraid I cannot retake my measurements, after my last post yesterday I went ahead and took cams off , so I will have to go with the measurements I have . As far as the convertion from mils to inches in my line of work we use 0.03937  instead of the 0.254 . Question : left exhaust I have 0.015 mils , the shim I had is .230 I used the calculator from the web and found that if I wanted to go to the top exhaust specs I would need a .205 shim . Don't understand why I need a thinner shim to go up to top of specs ??  Thank You . <><><><><><><> <><><><><><><>   Luc,   Your 0.03937 is also a correct value for use to convert millimeters to inches (international).  I like 25.4 for mechanical stuff as it is easy to remember and also as accurate as needed.  Either will work if used correctly.   0.015mm  times  0.03937 = 0.0005905" . 0.015mm divided by 25.4 = 0.0005905" .   Your left exhaust valve clearance is spec'd at 0.15-0.25mm (0.006"-0.010").  At 0.015mm (0.0006") it is .235mm (0.009") tighter than you want it.  Changing the shim from a 2.30mm shim you will have to reduce the thickness to 2.065 which is not available.  Shims are only available in 0.05mm (0.002") increments.  So you will have to use a 210 shim to keep from exceeding the maximum specified valve clearance of 0.25mm.   The reason you need a thinner shim is the measurement you are taking is between the shim and the cam.  If to make more clearance you use a thinner shim.  To make less clearance you use a thicker shim.   I still question your measurements but as you can't redo them my suggestion is to do the best you can with what you've got.  Turn the engine over using a 19mm socket on the rotor bolt turning the engine in a counterclockwise direction.  Then remeasure the clearances to make sure you have them correct.  Do not use the starter motor to crank the engine until you have verified it rotates completely through at least one full stroke cycle (two revolutions of the crank) and you have proper clearances.  If I recall correctly the KLR engine is an interference engine and that means the valves and piston can come in contact if not timed and adjusted correctly.  If when you are turning the engine over using the socket and you come to heavy resistance stop turning and fix the problem.  It is probably a valve hitting the piston.   If you have the inclination maybe measure the thickness of the feeler gage you used to get that valve clearance and verify it is properly marked.  As I noted earlier I have never seen a feeler gage thinner than 0.0254mm (0.001").   Best, Jeff Saline The Beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota 75 R90/6, 03 KLR650 . . . . . .     ____________________________________________________________ LensCrafters Glasses & Frames at LensCrafters. wolfman tank panniers?

Post by mark ward » Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:19 am

Hey all who have used these, or actually seen in person mounted. 4 things (so far)
What about, KNEE & LEG Space?
Where do you fasten/hook the straps under the tank, Pic's do not show much.
How well do they work with other large mag. tank bags etc?
ANY CON'S? things you did NOT like about long trips with them in place?
I wouldn't mind moving some weight forward. (or STACK LESS HIGH, on the seat. LOL) and I do use my EXTENDED highway bar/foot pegs.

wolfman tank panniers?

Post by Ateam » Tue Jun 17, 2014 10:31 am

I have the WM tank panniers and have used them three or four times. I mount them low on my radiator guards and they block a bit of wind as well. I only use the tank panniers when I have a full load and typically taking my dog camping with me as well. wolfman tank panniers?

Post by John Biccum » Tue Jun 17, 2014 11:31 am

I use the Wolfman tank panniers on an aftermarket plastic tank.  I lash them forward to the vent holes in the tank, where the side panels would be on a stock tank.  I lash them aft to the frame near where the forward side cover fastener is fastened. I have found the tank panniers also work remarkably well as miniature side bags. I used them as side bags on  a V-Strom fly-n-ride, I also used them as side bags on a DRZ. But on the KLR I use them as designed (on the tank).  I usually dedicate one side as the "dirty" side.  This side has a fuel bottle for my campstove, a quart of motor oil, small bottle of ATF for my chain oiler. I use the "clean" side for things I will want when I stop: a ball cap, a sweater or light jacket. The Wolfman tank panniers have proven to be one of the most practical bits of Moto luggage own. They are NOT waterproof, but this hasn't been a problem as I have other waterproof luggage or can resort to zip lock bags inside the panniers.    From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: 6/ 17/ 2014 11:19 To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Wolfman tank panniers?   Hey all who have used these, or actually seen in person mounted. 4 things (so far) What about, KNEE & LEG Space? Where do you fasten/hook the straps under the tank, Pic's do not show much.  How well do they work with other large mag. tank bags etc? ANY CON'S? things you did NOT like about long trips with them in place? I wouldn't mind moving some weight forward. (or STACK LESS HIGH, on the seat. LOL) and I do use my EXTENDED highway bar/foot pegs.

Her name is Stauffenburg, named after my favorite ski run in Taos. Australian Shepard Blue Merle. She is 4 years old. Thank you. From: mark ward Sent: Tuesday, June 17, 2014 10:30 AM To: Ateam ; List KLR Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Wolfman tank panniers? Ya have to, share your buddies name?

I only use the tank panniers when I have a full load and typically taking my dog camping with me as well.
