question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr

Post by Fred Hink » Tue May 27, 2014 10:04 am

Baiting, baiting, baiting.....  who s going to explode first?  I can t wait....   I just love the smell of Napalm in the mornings...  Good luck combatants. (if you don t know the drill,  it is either take a chill pill or take this off the list)   Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com   From: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, May 27, 2014 8:59 AM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com ; stephennrth@... What were your data points again? Obviously they are essential for security.. Bill Ahrens W. A. Ahrens & Associates On May 27, 2014, at 8:24 AM, "Stephen North stephennrth@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

YOU can believe what ever YOU want. And yes I DO believe my own data points taken in real time on my truck with my tonneau. (By the way, I'm not selling anything) but you saw it on TV?!!! It MUST be true for EVERYONE in ALL cases right? But let's get back to the point shall we? The difference in mileage is a trivial concern anyway up (or down in your case!) I was (trying) to answer the OP's original question (which I see you have made no attempt to contribute) listing several reasons why he might want to leave the tonneau on all the time. Tedious. On May 27, 2014, at 1:20 AM, Patrick Zegers wrote: I saw an episode where they tested tailgate up and down and up won. On Monday, May 26, 2014 9:13 PM, "Billahrens billahrens@... I would never attempt to make a blanket statement for all trucks and covers, accusing others of making false claims (based on my own individual results as you have) especially with regards to mileage as so many other factors can affect it. (Take your emergency brake off!) How heavy is the cover? Now that it's covered did you load the bed up with heavy tools and equipment? I wrote what MY results have been which I very carefully checked over multiple time periods keeping every factor the same. Other results may vary. The OP asked why he should leave his cover on all the time. That's just one reason. Keeping the bed dry and clean is another. Storage and security yet another. Mine lives on board. To me it's a no brainer.

question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr

Gee Wizz...... Twas I who asked the the question about pick up truck bed covers; and it seems that I inadvertently started a war of words.   I do thank those who replied.  Now, I am wondering if the mileage suffers when the KLR -v "la poderosa" - is riding in the truck's bed.  That is not a question?  I don't want to be attacked for letting my KLR ride in the pick up's bed when the KLR should be pulling/towing the pick up. I know for a fact that your Mileage will drop when you have a load in the bed. How much depends on the truck.   On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:51 AM, "eddiebmauri@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:

Well said.  Cant we just fight over tires or oil again instead? ---In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, wrote : Baiting, baiting, baiting.....  who s going to explode first?  I can t wait....   I just love the smell of Napalm in the mornings...  Good luck combatants.(if you don t know the drill,  it is either take a chill pill or take this off the list) Fred http://www.arrowheadmotorsports.com

I was teasing, ya'll! Geez. I didn't name a 90 degree v-twin a L-twin, Ducati did. They make more bikes in a day than we ever will and are a hoot to ride. So, L twin it is. At least when it's Italian made anyway. LOL =) Ride on!   eddie, waiting to see if some creative sort with more money than sense can shoe-horn a new Yamaha 850 cross plane triple into a dp bike like a KLR.

Last I looked at the 2 KLR's in my shop neither one was Vee motor

question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr

Assuming you're not on a downhill run.  :-)   I have heard of truckers that have put their semis in what they call Mexican overdrive, (neutral), and made some pretty good times and mileage coming out of Colorado with a full load.   Paul From: "mark ward nomad59@... Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:33 AM Subject: Re: [DSN_KLR650] Re: Question re Pick Up Truck Bed Cover - NKLR   I know for a fact that your Mileage will drop when you have a load in the bed. How much depends on the truck.   On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:51 AM, "eddiebmauri@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:
Gee Wizz...... Twas I who asked the the question about pick up truck bed covers; and it seems that I inadvertently started a war of words.   I do thank those who replied.  Now, I am wondering if the mileage suffers when the KLR -v "la poderosa" - is riding in the truck's bed.  That is not a question?  I don't want to be attacked for letting my KLR ride in the pick up's bed when the KLR should be pulling/towing the pick up. question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr

Post by mark ward » Thu May 29, 2014 8:35 am

I have made it to a few gas stations in "Mexican overdrive". 1 time, I was north of Idaho falls in the mountains 11,000 ft above sea level, single lane dirt rd. LUCKY I filled up at about 2/3rds of a tank, before heading up, because the gps said there was gas in about 75 miles.  Well. it was after labor-day (tourist season) and on a sunday, the ONE station was open that day from 11-3 for gas and/or lunch.  After hitting reserve, whenever I was riding down hill, I not only used neutral I hit the kill switch, to save on idling fuel. When I finally got to a station I put a quart more in the tank then the book says it can handle.   PS. I passed Only 1 truck, WAY back, and do to forest fires, all the motels were booked solid for about 120++ miles, filled with fire fighters, etc.       So that down hill neutral cruise, (mexican overdrive) has saved me a few times.  On Thursday, May 29, 2014 8:36 AM, "Paul Whatley pwhatfourever@...   Assuming you're not on a downhill run.  :-)   I have heard of truckers that have put their semis in what they call Mexican overdrive, (neutral), and made some pretty good times and mileage coming out of Colorado with a full load.   Paul From: "mark ward nomad59@... How much depends on the truck.   On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:51 AM, "eddiebmauri@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   Gee Wizz......

Post by Paul Whatley » Thu May 29, 2014 8:50 am

Lol. I hit reserve a few weeks ago. As a newbie I was surprised when that happened at 238 miles and thought my recently purchased trusty 2006 steed was failing me. I switched to reserve but it did not start easily. I may have flooded it too. I then read on the group that one member normally hits reserve between 240 and 245 miles. Who knew 20% of your fuel remained in reserve? Btw I did Eagle Mikes doohickey upgrade with torsion spring Memorial Day weekend without a glitch. 10,800 miles on this bike. Doohickey was cracked and spring was broken but still attached on one end... The other end just the loop was gone. I'm ordering a magnetic drain plug. Paul Sent from my iPhone

How much depends on the truck.   On Wednesday, May 28, 2014 8:51 AM, "eddiebmauri@... [DSN_KLR650]" DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com> wrote:   Gee Wizz...... question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr

Did you run clear out of gas till the engine stopped?  The reason your bike is hard to start after that is because the float bowl is mostly empty and it takes a while for fuel to fill it back up.  The flow of fuel from your petcock is only on when the engine is cranking with vacuum supplied to the petcock.  So it takes a few seconds or longer for enough fuel to flow into the float bowl to raise the level where the pilot jet has enough to start with and then it should start fine after that.  With experience, you can catch the engine starting to run out of fuel on the regular tank and make the switch to reserve while you are still moving.  You ll notice precisely when the fuel level is correct as the engine will stop stumbling and take throttle normally.  So if you are in the range of when you think you may run out of fuel, keep an eye and ear out for any performance changes and be ready to make the switch from regular tank to reserve.   You can always do the lean bike over and slosh the low side gas to the petcock trick.  You should be able to get another 10-20 miles doing this.  Fuel mileage like most everything else varies with the situation, so YMMV. Yes the engine did sputtered, coughed, wheezed and died before I switched to reserve after I had pulled off the road. So your explanation makes perfect sense, especially now understanding that gas flows only under vacuum. I filled my tank last night when I had 210 miles on the trip odometer.  Thanks much for the explanation. Will probably order that magnetic drain plug from you shortly. Paul Sent from my iPhone
