question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr
I bought a used pick up and it came with a hard fiberglass cover for the bed. I took it off, then I got to wondering, and this is my question, "other than being able to put stuff in the bed and locking it, does the bed cover do anything to improve mileage?" What is the benefit of the bed cover other than to store and lock stuff up?

If you are referring to a tonneau cover yes it will improve your mileage. At least it does on my Tundra. (about two miles per gallon.) mine has hydraulic struts to assist in opening /closing and it's strong enough to walk on. Keeps the bed completely dry. If you need to take it off, it takes about one minute with two people. It's light weight but a bit awkward for one person although it can be done with one person. I believe mine is made of roto-molded plastic though. I'd have to check to be sure.

question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr
The manufacturers claim they do:
http://www.agricover.com/access/saveongas/
By reducing the large dead area behind the cab the air can supposedly flow better over and behind the truck. I know the principle is sound, I don't know if it's worth the 10% claimed. The best mileage I ever got with my old Land Rover was when I towed a loaded (heavily loaded) utility trailer topped with two kayaks up north. Fooled the air into thinking I had a long, streamlined bullet. If the kayaks had been on the Rover instead of the trailer I am sure there would have been a difference.

Those claims are 100% false. I bought a high dollar bed cover 2 years ago, not for gas mileage improvement, but for security. ABSOLUTELY no improvement, maybe a slight decline (a couple of tenths. There are articles around that talk about swirling air in the bed etc.

So Bill, you want us to believe your claim that a tonneau cover actually makes your mileage go down?
I would never attempt to make a blanket statement for all trucks and covers, accusing others of making false claims (based on my own individual results as you have) especially with regards to mileage as so many other factors can affect it. (Take your emergency brake off!)
How heavy is the cover? Now that it's covered did you load the bed up with heavy tools and equipment?
I wrote what MY results have been which I very carefully checked over multiple time periods keeping every factor the same. Other results may vary.
The OP asked why he should leave his cover on all the time. That's just one reason. Keeping the bed dry and clean is another. Storage and security yet another. Mine lives on board. To me it's a no brainer.

I thought (hoping) that I would see a fuel mileage difference. If there is one, it is very minor. I bought mine for security and to keep things in the bed dry. It stays on almost all the time.
Undercover brand tonneau on a 2003 4x4 Ram. The cover is plastic and while I can lift and move it myself, it is by means a one man job to put it on the truck.

On The Mythbusters tv show in the science channel, they did a test using a precision gasoline flow meter, bed cover on and off. No improvement with bed cover.
Believe what you want, you are obviously selling bed covers.

mileage go down? I would never attempt to make a blanket statement for all trucks and covers, accusing others of making false claims (based on my own individual results as you have) especially with regards to mileage as so many other factors can affect it. (Take your emergency brake off!) How heavy is the cover? Now that it's covered did you load the bed up with heavy tools and equipment? I wrote what MY results have been which I very carefully checked over multiple time periods keeping every factor the same. Other results may vary. The OP asked why he should leave his cover on all the time. That's just one reason. Keeping the bed dry and clean is another. Storage and security yet another. Mine lives on board. To me it's a no brainer.

question re pick up truck bed cover - nklr
YOU can believe what ever YOU want. And yes I DO believe my own data points taken in real time on my truck with my tonneau. (By the way, I'm not selling anything) but you saw it on TV?!!! It MUST be true for EVERYONE in ALL cases right? But let's get back to the point shall we? The difference in mileage is a trivial concern anyway up (or down in your case!) I was (trying) to answer the OP's original question (which I see you have made no attempt to contribute) listing several reasons why he might want to leave the tonneau on all the time. Tedious.
I saw an episode where they tested tailgate up and down and up won. On Monday, May 26, 2014 9:13 PM, "Billahrens billahrens@...
