Mr. Polach,
I generally avoid political discussions on non-political fora, but since you dove straight into shaming, I felt compelled to retort.
Maybe, just maybe, some of those comments may have been tongue-in-cheek.
Regardless of whether they were or weren't, I see that you sit squarely in the camp of those who think that the government is entitled to your time without just compensation. It's a perfectly valid position, but many people would disagree with you, myself included.
I've been told that it's my "civic duty" to donate my time to the service of the government. However, with over 8 years of military service and a permanent service-connected disability, I consider my civic duty complete. It is not for you or anyone else to judge another's value that they place on their time or their freedom from servitude to the government. In my arrogant, libertarian nutjob opinion, people should be free to volunteer for it, or to decline jury service at their own discretion. Are we not free people after all? Do we serve the government's interests or does it serve ours?
Besides, would you want someone who didn't want to be there on your jury?

Yeah, I get to wait around, get treated like cattle, find a place to park when the employees all have parking spaces by the door, get to hear a judge who thinks he have a career as a comedian only to not be selected because I went to college.Nah, I'll let the suckers show up. They probably still think voting makes a difference, too.

Please DO NOT REPLY to my rant through the group!
I stand by my comments but PLEASE , I don't want this group to be ruined by a series of angry comments....
If you feel strongly...reply to me directly and I will try and ratchet down the tone to a moderate discussion .....
My comments were most definitely NON KLR and I should have restrained myself.
Maybe it's the weather....last night it was -25 degrees C. But by the weekend + 12????
Maybe a good ride will make the universe will unfold as it should...
But regardless don't let us mess up Fred's superlative site!

Thank you Martin for your kind observations but if you don t want the list to respond in a public forum, then you shouldn t be posting your message to the group. If you have an issue with an individual s opinions you have every right to contact them off list to continue your discussions. You are more than welcome to post any opinions here and if they are not KLR related to keep the NKLR in the subject line. I can t tell you how many letters I have written and not sent. Just writing down your feelings is sometimes enough of a release that sending them does no good. I have found through the years if there is an opinion expressed that we don t agree with and it strikes a deep emotional spot in you, it is probably best to count to ten or one hundred before writing that scathing retort or better yet not send the message at all. We don t try to be so tightly wound that a few words of differing opinion sets us off. Thick skins are sometimes acquired and preferred as we age along with this message group. This is not my group, it belongs to us all. My place is to moderate the fringe element, approve of new memberships and to take care of any troubles as we roll onwards. This group through the years has been a great place, we ve made lots of friends and members surprise me with their respect and knowledge of all kinds of subjects. Any opinions are allowed here as long as they don t become personal or cross the guidelines set out by Yahoo s Terms of Service. Keep up the Good Work. Fred

Jeff has hit it right on the nailhead. I gave 32 years of my life in service to my community. I have paid my dues. Mr. Polach should remember the words of Abraham Lincoln, a government OF the people, BY the people and FOR the people. I am not at the government's beck and call.

One of my problems serving is for 30 some odd years, I was a freelance illustrator....a very precarious and demanding profession....And not steady or guaranteed monies. You had to work when you can get it and often under impossible deadlines. And if you turned down work from a big ad agency or design firm, they don't call you again ( usually) because the competition is fierce in that profession. Everybody wants to be an illustrator or photographer. Invariably, the jury folks would summon me knee deep in dead lines that were impossible to begin with. I have almost got on a jury a couple of times....and would have served....but I guess they didn't like me. I have more time available now. Still, I know their are some out there who might wind up on a jury I was on.....that someone else would have to restrain me from wringing their neck.

As I started out saying and Criswell pointed out, TIMING IS NOT ALWAYS GREAT.
Are there any states that allow VOLUNTEERING!??
Like Giving Blood, I stop in when the timing is best for me.
ALSO, As a Shriner, I VOLUNTEER, as a Driver, to drive children (& parent) to one of our Hospitals.(NO COST TO FAMILY) Usually AN ALLLL DAY TRIP, 8hrs - 2days. (SERVING MY COMUNITY)
I chose the times that work best for me, that do not interfere with, trips or work etc., BUT, IF, there is a last minute NEED, (another driver sick and appointment would be canceled) I will take a day off work ETC.,
Why not allow the MILLIONS that want to be on jury duty, to SIGN UP AND GIVE DATES.
I have been stuck doing little all winter, IF THEY WOULD HAVE ASKED MONTHS AGO, WHEN YOU LIKE TO SERVE? I COULD HAVE LISTED MONTHS OF AVALIBILTY.
THEY DO NOT ALLOW THIS.
PLUS: The "List" they go from is WHO EVER HAS A DRIVERS LICENSE, WHAT A BOUT THE THOUSANDS, That do non have a license? I've know a few people in there 60's who never got one. Major cities the numbers are GREATER. NO NEED, AND NEVER HAD A CAR, SO NEVER GOT A LICENSE. (NY City)

All I hear in responses is how the government is taking YOUR time and since you already served you are done. Really? The system is set up this way on purpose. Your "civic duty" is to the other citizen (maybe another rider!) who is on trial because someday that might be YOU needing a "fair" trial. It's not about you and your precious time given to the government. (Again) And no, I wouldn't want a "volunteer" to serve on my jury. The jury box would be empty, either physically or mentally.

SOOO You are saying VOLUNTEERS ARE STUPID!OR JUST EVERYONE WHO IS RETIRED, OUT OF WORK, COLLEGE STUDENTS, WHO DO VOLUNTEER WORK, OR STUDDING LAW AND WANT THE EXPERIANCE OR SIMPLY, THE PEOPLE LIKE YOU, WHO WANTS TO "DO THIER DUTY".
ALL MENTALY AND PHYSICALLY WORTHLESS? (your words)
AND "DISABLED" PEOPLE ARE "EMPTY".???? (again your words)
As I said, I would VOLUNTEER and go sign up in the late fall to winter, when I'm less busy. While I know others who GO SOUTH, OUT OF STATE, would sign up for warm weather months, WHEN THEY ARE IN THE STATE.
