speedometer cable mount

Hey Ya'll

 

IT'S COLD OUT, and time to CREATE in the garage, and Before I get TO CREATIVE, ON  MY OWN, I thought I would toss it out there, for ideas, BEFORE I make it then get better ideas.

 

When I am OFF road camping, (in the woods ETC ETC.) setting up the stove etc to cook is a pain, and at times, USUALY, theres dry grass leaves etc,, sooooo.

 

I was thinking of designing a "leaf" type table that attaches to the Pelican case.

 

One case is often filled with kitchen stuff and I take it OFF the bike, but the other one can be left on the KLR, and therefor OFF THE GROUND.

 

I ALSO plan on attaching a bunch of "FOOTMAN LOOPS" (FL'S) to all 3 Pelican cases as tie down points.

 

My first thought was placing 2 F.L.'s in a way to use also to slip in hooks to hold the "TABLE" to the case, then come up with a way to hold it in the air STABLE, for putting the Whisperlite stove ETC ETC.

 

ISSUES: Table top, thin and light, for STORAGE, but strong & stable, (leave attached to outside of case?)

and what to use to hold it up in-place? (first thought small! chains & hooks?

BUT! I want it Higher on the case to stand next to it, Down low on the case I would have been able to hook the chains to the top. of the case.

I DO, carry a adjustable walking stick on all trips. (BAD knee's, goes out at times.)

Listers, What I have observed on Gen I KLR speedometer cables is an extreme flex above the right fork leg mount. The cable remains a fixed length from the speedometer drive hub at the axle and the fork mount. There is no movement of the cable below the mount. Above the mount the cable gets an extreme bend at the mount when the forks are compressed. My observation is the cable housing tends to crack/break at that bending point. The Gen II KLRs have a guide mounted to the right fork leg and it allows the cable movement (about 5") resulting in flex for the entire length of the cable. This eliminates the extreme bend and later damage to the cable housing like exhibited on the Gen I KLRs. I made a few mounts like that used on Gen II KLRs years ago for Gen I KLRs when I first noticed the damage on my speedometer cable housing. I think it was about two years ago I finally had to replace the entire cable assembly on my KLR as the cable housing broke. The cable inside was still in good shape. A year later we put the cable in one of RevMaaatin's KLRs when his housing was good but the cable frayed. It was a stock cable into a stock housing. We had to remove about 1/4" of cable to allow it to work. Wattman has one of the original mounts I made and told me a few months ago it was still working well and his KLR now has over 101,000 smiles on it with the original speedometer cable and housing. For whatever its worth... I use wheel bearing grease to lube the speedometer cable as I have that very handy. I think packing the speedometer drive hub full of grease is more important than the cable itself as the grease will migrate up the cable in use.
