I had a few hours to spend riding around so I had breakfast at Tuggle's Gap restaurant. The breakfast burrito was excellent. I shot the breeze with some guys that were just down from Roanoke. One was on a race prepped R6, the other on a Duc 998. Unbelievably, they were on one of the greatest roads around (Rt 8 from Tuggles Gap to Woolwine)...yet they just rode straight back to Roanoke. Oh well, I had some riding to do.... I headed south on Rt 8, I see there's some construction going on. My initial fear that the road was being straightened was unfounded, they're just moving the bank back to keep the road clear. My GPS showed a rather interesting gravel road going up Rock Castle Creek Gorge (CC Camp Rd), it turns out the road ended in about a mile at the trailhead. No motorized vehicle access. So on I rode.... Rt 8 S towards Rt 58 has a few turnoffs for covered bridges but I just didn't feel up for sightseeing. I did make my way over to Belcher Mtn (rt 609 I think). That's one STEEP gravel road. The road up was pretty washboarded, I spent a bit of time spinning my way up. I think maybe having the knobby rear helped, then again I would've taken my Bandit up this road but done it much slower. Belcher Mtn was pretty scenic with some interesting single track turnoffs (which I later found were true single track and probably not much fun for a KLR). One of the prettiest homesites I've ever seen was on Belcher Mtn. A fella built a pretty nice house and just HAD to have a lake. He dammed up a stream and has a fine private lake. It's waaaay outta the way but a nice place to live nonetheless. I spilled out on some other gravel roads, eventually making my way to Willville. ( www.willvillebikecamp.com ) Will had a small number of bikes at his place, mostly folks from out of state. I was hoping Will could give me some insight on some nice DS roads around. And he did. 20 minutes later, I was heading west on Rt 58 from Meadows of Dan and turned right on River Road (rt 664 I think). Just as Will said, the pavement ended just off the main highway and soon plunged down to follow the River. There were some nice places to swim and there were some folks taking advantage of the cool water. I was pretty close to jumping in myself...but didn't. Maybe next time around. This road ended at Silverleaf Drive. I turned right per Will's directions and passed http://www.campcurtaincall.com/. Continuing on there was a nice motocross track just off the road. Will said I'd see it and that some guy from Florida bought some land a built a professional level motocross course. I went through an open gate and took a look at the track. That guy is serious! I kind of made some noise and waited around but never saw anyone. I'll have to head down there again sometime soon. The nearest town is Dugspur, Va. Eventually, I made my way to Rt 221 just south of Dugspur and headed north towards home. It was hot as the dickens riding up rt 221 towards Floyd. I stopped for gas and headed on home via a couple of back roads between rt 221 and the BRP. Highest elevation this day: 3421 ft Highest speed: 74mph MPG: 51 Total miles: 156 I realized I need to get some things together before I head off into the woods again: Bottle of water, small survival kit (matches, space blanket, first aid kit,etc), powerbars and some other doodads. Most of this stuff is in my Roadgear tankbag which just won't quite fit on the KLR tank. I'll have it all together next time I head out. Yeah, this was a pretty tame ride, but I need to get some stuff (skid plate, doohickey fix, upgraded brakes, etc) for the KLR before I hit the hard stuff. Anyway, I hope you rode somewhere today.... Ive got the kawa bags and they are small but seam to be very good quality. If you dont plan on carrying much more than rain gear and a few other odds and ends their great. I add a backpack for winter riding to be able to carry more gear. For travel or camping they would be much to small.
