06 klr fork springs recommendations

Hello peeps.  Going on a week long Moab trip in @ 3 weeks and the fork springs on my bike just suck.  Looking at .80 Race Tech springs.  I weigh @ 220 without gear.  Bike has about 22K.  Advice is appreciated.

 I think most people use Progressive springs.  Race Tech uses one spring and tunes the rate by shortening them.  Good for racing, but can be harsh.  I like full length springs because I ride for long distances and plush is better.   Setting the fork oil height at about 6" from the top with the forks compressed and the springs in is also important.  A lot of people will use heavier oil, but unless you drill one of the rebound damping holes to 1/16 inch, the suspension will tend to stack. Hey Everyone!

 

Just bought a 2002 KLR650 w/6K miles - PO was not a maintenance master .

 

I m changing every fluid tightening everything new brake pads, etc, etc bringing everything to a new baseline

 

Anyway changing fork oil to 15w some say Ok , some say Nay mine were way too soft but I suspect it was probably low on oil and original almost 14 year old oil.

 

I ended up adding approx 16 oz of oil to the fork fork was off bike at the maximum compression, no spring.  I still did not get to the perceived linear measure - but everything I ve read suggests 12 oz fork oil capacity or a couple of more for a firmer ride

 

I weigh about 180 and will be mostly street initially until I get used to the bike then start stretching my legs on fire roads.  I m too old to be a radical technical trails rider, but I do plan on getting into the woods some.

 

So, the question is does that amount of fork oil sound reasonable?

I m comfortable I have changed the oil correctly now. Forks feel 1000% better. But, progressive springs are probably next and emulators.

I rode 25,000 miles on my 2007 without doing anything, noticed increased vibration, opened it up, found a broken spring. Based on the recommendation of Fred Hink and Eagle Mike, I am installing the torsion spring and the Eagle Mike upgrade. Robert Wichert ===========================================
