loud!!! horns (kind of non-klr)

Post by mark ward » Mon Aug 19, 2013 5:17 pm

Kind of non KLR Because besides the Doo Hickey being a weak point, as with MOST bikes the horns are LESS THEN WHIMPY. AGAIN!!!!!!!!! TODAY. I was riding along and I must have been in the blind spot of a Loaded pickup truck, because he started moving over into the right lane, MY LANE. Pushing me towards the curb, With car's not to far in front and rear, AND I COULD HEAR HIS RADIO ON. (NOT judging or complaining just pointing out a NEEDED detail.) I hit the horn, and I would say "lucky" But it was WISDOM that I HAVE A LOUD HORN. It even took him a few seconds, to realize WHO was "honking" (and me hitting the gas, to get in his side window view.) After hitting his breaks and getting back over, and He made sure to catch up and point to himself and say SORRY "MY FAULT. (Very Nice of him.) It was a reminder of, WHY I LOVE LOUD HORNS! SPEND THE FEW DOLLARS, UPGRADE YOUR HORN. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Loud tires save lives (heh). Not a fan of loud pipes or don't really care. I have had people tell me you can't hear a loud bike coming from your rear. Uhh.....I can and did 2 or 3 times last weekend. I knew exactly where they were. Criswell pouring gasoline on the campfire.

You do hear load pipes, but not feel ALARMED by them. In a lot of traffic we hear a lot, and over the years have learned to IGNORE the noise. Thou while I am sure most bikers look around when we hear something, (mostly out of curiosity of what bike it is.) of MOST in a car are not. Yet a HORN being honked, we realize is most often an ALERT sound, especially if it is a long BLAST. (full second or MORE, and or rapid.) I have seen a LOUD horn wake up un-alerted drivers to a situation MANY MANY times. (including myself) A LOUD HORN, It's far from a "farkel" or accessory to me. Stebel is one of my favorites, and I have use friaam highway blasters (FULL set of 2) also.

A really funny post on horn upgrade in the TWT Bandit section was this guy putting one of these super airblaster horns on his Bandit. One morning a girl was pulling over into his lane with him right on the side of her window. He hit the Blaster and she threw her coffee all over the windshield and nearly crashed into the opposite lane getting back into her lane. Said he never stopped laughing all the way to work. I've want to but never bit the bullet on getting one of these horns for both bikes. I've heard them and they sound like a major truck is blowing. Andy in Jennings with an '00 KLR with 34,000 miles in 13 years and an '07 Bandit, bought in the Spring of '08 with +70,000 miles and my '03 Chevy truck with 65,000 miles on it. Something wrong here. LOL

Here's a nice write-up with photos. If you are handy with basic shop tools, one can fabricate a similar mount (not necessarily one as NASA as this one) and get the job done. =) http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?p=4135274

balancer chain tension

Post by RobertWichert » Wed Aug 21, 2013 1:24 pm

Why doesn't the doohickey tension the balancer chain all the time? The cam chain is tensioned all the time. Why not the balancer chain? Why not loosen the "permissive lock" every day? -- Robert Wichert P.Eng. LEED AP BD&C +1 916 966 9060 FAX +1 916 966 9068 ===============================================
