Hey folks, Thought I'd offer this up to someone on the list before I sell it thru the local paper, I think it would be a great deal. 2002 A16 KLR, 11826 miles on the clock, with the following mods; Progressive fork springs Black Daystar fork boots Happy trails K9 fork brace Braided steel front brake line MAP front rotor with Galfer green pads on front, Galfer black rear pads ( extra set of new Galfer greens for front) Maer tinted bar mount windscreen, mounted behind the stock screen, looks great and makes a nice air pocket at speed. Bar mounted LCD backlit volt meter Moose bash plate ( not mounted) Corbin flat seat, carbon fiber style Center stand Life Bright LED auxilary brake lights Laser Pro Duro exhaust ( quite street model) Dyno jet carb kit K&N filter, air box is stock with snorkel removed Jakes doohickey installed ( stock spring though ) New Dunlop 604 tires with approx 200 miles, still have the nipples on them License plate bracket has been raised MSR gear shift lever 16T front sprocket BMW style outlet for electric vest Kawasaki service manual & supplement. Valves & balance chain were adjusted at 11050 miles, along with oil change. Coolant was changed last summer, but I neglected to write the mileage down. I have the stock seat, fork boots, air filter, front brake rotor, front springs, 15T front sprocket, all of which are like new. Synthetic oil changes since after break in period every 2500 miles. Bike has always been kept in the garage, almost all street miles and some lite off road miles, no stream crossings or ridden in the rain. Never been down, NO scratches, dents or dings, no faded plastic, basically looks new and the engine is very quite for a KLR. Clear title with California registration fees paid until march 2005. I love this bike and have never abused it, the only reason I'm selling it is because I'm taking delivery of a KTM 950 Adventure tomorrow which, hopefully, I'll love even more. No haggle price is $3000.00 firm. If buyer wants to haggle, price is $3700.00 firm. I can email pictures to serious buyer. Hey folks again, I would like to apologize for not responding individually to all the inquiries that I received ( there are a LOT of people who read this list) in regards to my post yesterday about selling my KLR, but after riding my KTM for most of the day, which is a fantastic machine by the way but not without a few warts of its own, it became apparent to me that it's no replacement for my KLR and I've decided to keep it. Quite a testimonial for our humble low tech KLR's I guess, I just can't part with it. Appears you guys are just stuck with me until the thing wears out, and judging by the way it runs, that might be a while. Hey folks I have an A18 with about 700 miles on it, brand new has every after market do dad you can get (except the do-hicky as its still under warranty,) center stand steel brake line, all nerf bars front and back, highway pegs, larger kaw windshield, bar snake rear caliper guard, large padded grips, the Kaw, saddle bags and Trunk bag, total cost about 6,000.00 for sale for 4700.00 (had to thin the stable a bit have 5 bikes and want to upgrade the street bike to a BMW rs 1200 soooooo the mrs says it has to go....email me if interested I am in the tampa bay area Florida...Dave

First impression ? Well, I'll tell ya, yesterday after I put the first 150 miles on it here in the valley, elevation about a 160' above sea level, temp in the eightys, I was less than pleased with the mighty KTM. All though I researched it plenty and had been following the development of the LC8 engine for some time, and knew that right out of the box they ran lean, I wasn't quite prepared for the way it did run. What the magazine testers call "a slight lean surge at 3500 rpm" was actually a machine that is so leaned out it was hardly rideable under 4000 rpm. Pinging, sneaseing thru the carbs, idle hunting over the place, popping badly thru the mufflers on decel, engine very buzzy, this thing brought new meaning to the term lean surge. Way worse than the KLR was when I first got it. The good news is that this is an easy and free fix, the Mikuni carbs on this bike have adjustable needles with a proper taper from the factory and the pilot screws are easy to get to. How KTM snuck this by the EPA, I don't have a clue. The second thing that made a firm impression, on my arse, is that the seat could double as some sort of sadistic torture device, it's hard as a rock and slides you forward toward the tank. Knew about that too, Corbin allready makes a seat for it, no problem. The mufflers both have cats and they put off serious radiant heat, no problem here, replacement KTM non cat mufflers (quite) will be here next Wednesday. Today got up early to beat the heat and headed up I80 towards Reno, Nev., cut over on RT 89 towards Lake Tahoe, put on a couple hundred miles at an average elevation of 7000'. All is forgiven. The elevation, mother natures own diagnostic tuning tool, helped mask the leaness and helped me see what will be. This engine absolutely sings, makes very cool mechanical sounds. The six speed trans is the smoothest I've ever used. Redline on this engine is 9500 RPM, 98 HP, 5100 RPM in sixth is an indicated 90 mph and it's electric motor smooth. Wind coverage is very good also. The handling, chassis and brakes are outstanding. It a large bike, sitting next to the KLR out in the garage, the KLR looks like a dwarf, claimed weight of 436 lbs, about a 100 lbs more than the KLR. Funny thing is that once rolling, due KTM's efforts to keep the center of gravity low ( 2 plastic gas tanks,5.8 gallons all usable, both positioned below and behind your knees, battery below the radiator, behind the front wheel, ect)it feels much less top heavy and actually feels lighter than KLR. Next week I'll pull the carbs and do some tweaking, check the valves ( shim under bucket, cams have to come out) put the non cat exhaust on and post an unbiased comparo between it and the KLR, put some pictures in the files or on my server of the two side by side, and show the Maier bar mount windscreen on the KLR, got a lot of private emails asking for pictures of it. I've tried several different screens and this on looks and works good for me. The BMW R1200GS looks good on paper, 60 lbs heavier than the KTM though, less gas capacity, and I'd guess quite a bit more money. I've owned 1 BMW, a K75S, thing was in the shop more than I rode it, swore I'd never own another one. One more observation, I think the KLR is more bang for the buck than anything else out there, and it's a blast to ride too, and at this point I can't imagine taking the KTM off road.
