I was going out for a ride Sunday and the metal zipper on my jacket wouldn't stay closed unless you jimmied the slider up. The teeth were fine, but the slider was worn out. That night I figured I would just get a new jacket, this one was nearly 8 years old. New ones are on sale $135 . But all it needs is the zipper fixed, why not just get a new zipper and sew it in? Ebay searching, I couldn't find the whole zipper, but just the slider thing came up in different sizes. #5, #6, #7, etc.(measured in mm). So I got the zipper fixed for under $10, not just fixed but restored to a better than new condition. I got a chap-stick like lubricant and complete printed instructions on changing the slider out. I guess I'm good for at least another 8 years, zipper-wise. How many tents, gym bags, jeans, and a million other things have I thrown away only because the stupid zipper broke? I have had an Aerostich leg zipper replaced by a seamstress here in town. Metal zipper (not plastic like Aerostich uses) but what the hell, it works great. Done in three days. I keep a water bladder in the tank bag on trips. Been running that way for the last 15 or so years. Returning from trips I run a bit of a bleach/water combo though it. Hang it to dry, put it in a ziplock bag and in the fridge till the next time I need it. Also pull the bite valve apart at this time and reasemble next time I put it in use. Never got the hang of having one strapped to my back.
