I tried my first valve adjustment today. Did fine up to the point where I was torquing down the cam cap bolts. It calls for 104 in/lb however one of the bolts snapped in two before I got to that point. Now I'm a litte scared to torque anything any further. Anyone else run into this problem? Also, I found I needed to remove the radiator hose from the radiatior in order to get the valve cover off. I lost about a pint of coolant. Is it okay to just reconnect the hose and then add coolant to the radiator? Will any coolant work? steve

Whoa ! This again. It seems to be part of the klr initiation. I'd go ahead and torque down the other bolts. If you want to be careful, first by hand then with a small ratchet and only at the end with your 1/4" drive torque wrench. You have to re-install the caps at some point and there's only one way to find out if any other bolts are weak. Are you sure you know how to set the torque wrench to the proper spec ? Recently there's been a discussion on the list about broken bolt removal. The consensus seemed to have been to first try to remove it with a punch or a pick; if that doesn't work buy a bolt remover. I'd go with the Honda pre-mixed ant-freeze. BTW, you don't have to remove the hose even though it'll take a little maneuvering and wiggling to get the cover off. Bogdan

I hate to point out the obvious, but it seems to be the most common oversight. Did you try torque it to 104 FT-lb instead of IN-lb? 104 in-lb = 8.66 ft-lb. Were you able to remove the bolt?

Any coolant will work for the cooling part, but if you don't use one that is silicate free (motorcycle specific ones almost always are, as well as some automotive types, but check the labels), your cooling system will suffer in the long run. Use a 50/50 mix of water/antifreeze, or if you want to be lazy, buy some premixed stuff. Cheers, Gustavo PS were in Oregon are you?

Steve be EXTRA carefull with that torquing! I snapped that bolt while doing my valve clearance adjustment, half of the bolt was stuck in the head and it had to be drilled out. Major pain! Are you using a 3/4 torque wrench ? Is that torgue walue in the middle range of your wrench ? Supposedly torque wrenches may give inaccurate readings near the bottom of their scales. I'm usually just a lurker and always learn and enjoy the chatter.? I thought some of you might be interested in a ?ride in Southern Tennessee coming up the last weekend in June.? AMA Factory Creek Adventure Ride Well how about something different to go out and have some fun doing an adventure ride! This is a AMA event that will take you on a ride through the Tenn. country side and some very back roads exploring the wilds. This ride is done on ALL PUBLIC ROADS, so you must have a street legal ride, but it can be a dual sport kind of bike as the mix is 65% pavement and 35% gravel roads. NO TRAILS. One loop is 175 miles and the 2nd loop is 143 miles with a nice camp site and meal available on Sat. It should be a great deal of fun and a rather laid back kind of event. Thanks guys for giving me the size of the wrench need to remove the cam shaft bolts. I was going to order a torque wrench adapter to be able to torque down those bolts properly and needed to know the size. It will be a week or so before I get to it. Motion pro has one that is a box end wrench for 12 and 14 mm for 15 bucks, and I was hoping it would fit. They also have one that is not size specific for 49 dollars. When I adjusted the valves a few months back, I didn't toque them and I'm not comfortable with that. I'm going to do it again and use Loctite and torque them to spec this time. Again, thanks.
