missed the deer but not the corner ;-(
Well , to the people on the list that know of me, I went down North of McDonald Observatory on TX 818 the 28th of May at about 5PM. Great little road and riding my Suzuki Bandit 1250S at about 70% when entering about a 30 mph curve and a deer jumped in front of me. It was all automatic in straightening the bike, on the brakes, throwing it back down to dragging the pegs to get around the corner after missing the deer by about a foot. But, front got into the sandy side and off we went into the rocks at about 25 or so mph. Didn't really have time to look but was doing about 35/40 coming into the curve.
So, down goes the bike and into the rocks. Over pretty fast and not sure of the path I took as I ended up facing the way I came with the left side of the bike down. Major dent in the right side of the tank and windshield gone was the main damage to the bike. My left shoulder feeling kinda of numb but working a little. No cell coverage, no traffic, no nothing on that road. Finally got the bike back up on the 3rd try , mounted and rode it out to I 10 and then to Fort Stockton to a motel then to hospital. Separated left shoulder was the call after many X rays. Back to the motel and to work on getting a U haul van to get the bike back to Louisiana which happened on Thursday afternoon with the Van, Loaded and rolling home Friday morning and getting home Saturday morning late.
Trip to my Doc with more xrays and MRI and now a conference with Docs tomorrow. One was pretty sure surgery on the shoulder is gonna happen fast. Bruises and contusions all over my body so the rock gave me a good beating. But, Alive to ponder on it.
Think this is putting an end to my long distance Motor travel. More of a KLR on the back of my truck with camper deal now. We'll see.

Don't let something out of your control get you down.
The shoulder will mend, the Suzuki can be fixed and there's always deer season for revenge.

Sorry for your misfortune, but glad it wasn't worse. I've seen more deer on my travels in Texas than in any other state, and I've ridden in 49 of them.
I hope your recovery comes quickly.

Bummer Andy. I thought I was going down a couple days ago on my Concours north of Dallas / Ft. Worth. Our current leader is correct on one thing, our infrastructure is in serious need of refurbishing. Riding along at a pretty good clip on a heavy bike. Suddenly a road I'd been down a couple of times that was fine....er.....turned to gravel in spots for the next 20 or 30 miles. Should have been on my gravel road bike (kLR).
Deer.....I wish people that love them so or get fat off deer leases would put up deer fences. Deadly for motorcycle riders and not too much fun coming through the windshield of a small car. Only squirrels are dumber.
Get well soon Andy.

Actually, the various DNRs and the hunting establishment have got a great scam going, with deer leases, licenses, and a deer "season". We don't need a season, we need a bounty. These are vermin of the deadliest kind. More people (mostly motorcyclists) are killed by deer than by wolves or other predators.

Deer seem to be everywhere these days. I have even seen deer crossings around here and saw a couple on the north side of my town lake. One of my greatest fears on a bike. Good reason not to see how fast your bike will go on a deserted hwy. A friend was put into the hospital last year by one southwest of Austin about 10:30 A,M. He remembered a gray flash and getting into the helicopter. It totaled his brand new BMW 800, People think they are so cute.....UUURRRGH! Bring back herds of mountain lions and wolves. Riding back from Moab about 4 years ago, I saw a downed sport bike and dead deer about sunrise just south of Chama NM. Apparently the rider died as their was a little roadside cross there the next year. Spooked me a little riding over to Taos that morning. Passed a couple deer wiggling their dumb ears at me on the edge of the road on the way over. I have almost hit two buzzards in my windshield on my Concours as the were munching on the carcass of dead deer and didn't want leave dinner until the last second. Sigh....maybe I would get back into boating? Nah.....too many Jerk Ski's.

I had a guy in Jackson Hole WY say he thought those whistlers attract them. He said he almost hit a moose on his Harley with deer whistlers. The moose was spinning around in the road acting confused. Maybe loud pipes attract moose (heh).

1st. Deer Whistles, "Motorcycle Consumer News" Magazine, showed the results of several Universities.
NO Good, could cause more harm, Seer get used to cars, etc., (Natural sounds to them) and the LOW powered whistle causes confustion at the last moment, when YOU ARE CLOSE TO THEM.
There are a couple of EXPENSIVE Electronic ones that had a mild effect, IN ADVANCE, Get deer moving BEFORE you are TO CLOSE.
BUT!!! They WARNED, As with Radar detectors, the Riders / drivers, learned to Put ALL there trust in the Gadget, and relax there own OBSERVATION!!!
2nd. "Deer kill more bikers"?, That's like complaining Fish make the water smell, IT'S THERE AREA! MEN KILL MORE DEER then anything else.
(Respect Nature, as well as your own home (Better then some) and Alll will go better.)
3rd. FISH, DO NOT make the water smell, That's the Plants, ALGIE, ETC. breaking down. (Note that a small pond with NO fish stinks like a swamp, while a large fresh water lake may have NO smell at all.)
of dead deer and didn't want leave dinner until the last second. Sigh....maybe I would get back into boating? >> > > > >> > > > Criswell >> > > > >> > > > Sent from my iPad >> > > > >> > > > On Jun 9, 2013, at 3:07 PM, "achesley43@" wrote: >> > > > >> > > > > Well , to the people on the list that know of me, I went down North of McDonald Observatory on TX 818 the 28th of May at about 5PM. More of a KLR on the back of my truck with camper deal now. missed the deer but not the corner ;-(
I ran deer whistles on my BMW GS for about 2 years. Never saw any difference in deer reaction on the side of the road with or without them. Like they didn't even notice them.
One thing I will say. A large thumper ( KLR DR ETc ) and the boom it makes does get them going away. And this is with a stock can with a couple holes drilled in it. Not very loud at all. Much safer to ride a KLR in deer country that a Suzuki Bandit for sure. Probably gonna be my ride of the future.
Only wish Kawasaki would put FI on that bike. I'd dump both my bikes and buy it in a heart beat.
By the way, first therapy session today. Loved it. In fact was cautioned about pushing too hard too fast. I'm hard into that stuff.
AC recovering rapidly in Jennings, La.
