Reasons I can think of for smelling gas in the vicinity of the bike: Float bowl needle/seat leaking petcock not sealing leaks from hoses or whatever Reasons for the fuel tank being pressurized. Interesting - Apparently the tank vent only works one way, to relieve vacuum in the the tank that would stop fuel flow. It probably was designed to keep fumes in and not to also relieve excess pressure. Two things that would create pressure would be extreme change in altitude or temperature. If the fuel is cold it will expand as it warms.The traditional method of tank venting via a pinhole in the cap or elsewhere would resolve this issue. It's the concern for a few fumes escaping that created these overly complex tank venting systems. Considering the number of bikes on the road vs. diesel big rigs I think it's being penny-wise and pound-foolish. And, the fumes escaped anyway. See this thread for a detailed procedure for inspecting the fuel cap. The last post caused me to remember something else. I had a gas cap (KLR) that was bubbling gas out the keyway when the riding got rough in Moab 2 years ago. Disassembly of the cap indicated the O ring on the back of the key cylinder was fine, no cracks, not worn, or hardened, etc. But it just wasn't sealing. I stuffed another O ring from the hardware in on top of the factory part and crammed it all back together in the cap. The key was a bit harder to turn for about a month until everything compressed and seated. But, no more gas bubbling out the keyway. My point is, its possible the vent diaphragms are working right and the O ring is not sealing well, allowing fumes to leak past. Food for thought. My old 1998 KLR650 would build up pressure in the tank when the weather was hot. So when you went to get gas there would be a whoosh as you opened the cap. I believe the vent is a one way valve, which only lets air in, and not out. I'd surmise this is due to EPA regulations on having a sealed system were no vapors escape. The vent allowing air in keeps the tank from becoming a negative pressure, which allows the fuel to flow into the carb. If you have a car without a vented tank, it will do the same thing.
