I am 220 plus riding gear and 25-35lbs of campign gear, tools, first aid... I want to get my preset sag where it should be. On an 08 does that mean buying another shock?

can the spring on the stock 08 rear shock be replaced
Skypilot,
I would have to say yes. I was at 240lb and take about 50lb of stuff. with just my weight I left the shock set to 5. I am not an aggressive rider. I bought a 7.4kG spring from Top Gun and now it sets on 1 for me with the correct sag. Their literature leans towards the 6.6kG spring for my weight.
Another Webpage that deals with more racing suggests an 8.3kG spring for my weight.
I am happy with the action of the spring I have. I plan on strapping some ammo cans to it soon. I use mine more as a commuter, fire road bike.

OK, tires and tubes are settled. I went with the mt-21s again. There was
a lot of discussion about what back tire was better, 606, mt21 or d63.
The original reason for considering something other than the mt21 rear
was the life. Talking to several people I get the sense that the 606 is
good at some things but will not out grab the 21 on rock or deep mud.
Since that is what I have to do a thousand miles of I have decided to
take the shorter life and stick with the mt21 rear. I have never heard
a reasonable argument for anything other than the mt21 front for mixed
rally riding. New HD tubes are ready for both and the rear will get
drilled for a rim lock while it is being trued later in the week.
The front forks got progressive springs with 7.5 weight synth fork oil
but filled to 130mm instead of 135mm. The 7.5 should let the forks react
a little faster which is important with all the rock we have in New
England and in the technical sections in Canada. The extra 5mm should
hold off some of the fork dive. If it doesn't work out I have the 10
weight fork oil and can change it after I try the 7.5.
The chain with both high and low front sprockets and a new stock rear
are in route now. The rear spring will need to wait until after the
rally. I have some late nights coming up to get it all done but the
shopping part is over and the decisions are made. Now I just need to
wrench then drive then ride.
14 days till I leave. Why do I always wait to do these things?
