side panel screw, tip
Nice, another great idea.
Those without a welder could probably locktite the nut in place to the same effect.
My 2-step solution is even more frugal:
1) remove both covers
2) sell covers on eBay
Naked airbox looks fine. Ugly orange battery not so much. But if I wanted to ride a pretty bike I'd be on my Moto Guzzi Mille GT. Even wife, NOT a bike fan, thinks the black with gold pinstripes Goose is beautiful. Pity its torture to my knees

Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Side panel screw, Tip
Hey I was RE-assembling the KLR after doing Shims ETC. and noticed a Mod I did a few yrs back.
The Back screw on the side panel is at times a PAIN to get it WAY INSIDE the hole, and keep the washer on also. (No sex jokes intended)
I got a LONGER Hex head bolt, (2-2.5inchs) and ran a nut up the threads, Then tacked welded a washer in place.
Now the Head sticks out just enough that when seated I can get at it with my fingers to start it or take it out, AND the washer is ALWAYS in place. (You should lube the washer before installing the bolt so it is less harsh on the plastic.
